Lookin for a plaque for mounting antlers
« on: May 02, 2013, 08:53:00 PM »
Anyone know where I can get some nice plaques to mount antlers on, maybe shaped like a knapped arrowhead???  Not crazy about the commercial plaques sold in the Big Box stores. Thanks

Van Dyke's taxidermy supply

Very good prices and plenty to chose from.

Sean, Stop into Micheals craft store.

They have a bunch of differant shaped Basswood plaques, and also a bunch of "slab" log cut plaques. All very resonably priced!!!
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

thanks guys, I have about8 "decent" racks that need plaques.  I cut the skull plates out, not even thinking of a euro mount.  Hey Chuck, I did that with a few of my older ones, was looking for something different.

Herdbull I may just get them for a future euro mount. thanks!

Sean, one other Suggestion.  My Dad makes all his own plaques.  He uses old rough Sawed Barn wood.  It looks great, even when he densest shape them nicely.  One thing hes done with a bunch of racks is to have one old barn board with 3 or 4 racks. the board would hang vertical and that is a great way to display multiple racks with limited wall space.

Here are sme pictures of some old oak barn board that have been finished. But alot of the unfinished board look great, I just dont have any pictures.  he uses a jig saw and a router on these before he does the rest of the mount.

You can see in the back ground of this one, of a vertical barn board.

I love those skull mounts, never tried that before. Really like the turkey and the rustic board with the saw kerf marks left in it. Good stuff!

For the rest of us cheapies, I bought 5 assorted plaques at Hobby Lobby or Michael's Crafts, for about $3 each. They came out great, finally got some older horns out the shed and on the wall.

I have a couple of arrowhead designs. I cut them out of pine, burn the wood with a torch and then take a wire brush to the burned wood, brushing the burn with the grain (not across the grain).  Rinse in water and dry.  Makes a nice looking plaque.
