Hey String Makers!
«
on:

I have been thinking about making my own strings for quite some time now. I dropped the hammer a couple days ago and ordered everything (I think) I need to make B50 flemish twist strings, including a video.
I was wondering if anyone who makes strings would like to share some thoughts, hints, suggestions or industry secrets.
I look forward to this new endeavor!
Thanks

I just started making my own strings as well; it's a lot of fun. Rewarding, too, to take a rather noisy bow and make my own skinny string. Now it's a dead thump. I gathered a lot of valuable technique from this video, it's very well done:
What took me a few tries was arriving at the proper length, but once you get it right for your 62" bow you know relative on your jig for a 66" etc. You'll be very pleased with your decision to start doing this! Have a good time.

Make sure you back twist, and it may take a few to make em look perfect. That is the most forgiving material, so they will probably look good rather quickly. It's fun to make your own, and pretty cheap.

The one video I bought, "Doin' the Twist", covered way more than I needed to know. Good Luck with your new hobby.

One thing that I found to be a big help was building myself a string stretcher. That way you can make strings of any length; not just for the bows you have. You also don't have to worry about warping a limb trying to stretch a string.
Here are some plans for the one I made. If you can't read them, let me know and I'll send you a more legible copy.

Thanks for the responses guys! I look forward to learning this new skill.
Chase thanks for the video link. I think I'll be watching a lot of it!
dhaverstick I like the stretcher. I actually had something similar brewing in my head.
Thank you all again.
