I need to talk with Yew...
« on: June 02, 2013, 12:40:00 PM »
Who makes an all yew bow....kinda like the old yew war bows?

Is there any 'old growth' Yew left and put up somewhere? Yew know....the 'real stuff'.

I've only shot but one, and it was #113 pounds and about 74 inches long, a war bow....so, I had a little difficulty comparing the 'snap' folks talk about with yew compared to say one of my 60 or 70# bows.  Yeah, the 'snap' of Yew....I've heard that a lot but haven't experienced it as all my bows are either boo, action boo, maple, or osage cored.

I'm considering a 68 or 70 inches maybe ...60-70#s.....

What's the lowdown on Yew these days.

I want to hear from the guys in the know....and yew know who you are....     :campfire:

My first thought was Jay St.Charles. I researched his name and found his website right away. Amazing looking web page! I think he would be the one to talk to.

Did you check with ED Scott? Maybe he works with Yew. I know he is a true craftsman with an excellent reputation

Jay St. Charles has been making them his whole life.  That would be where I'd go if I was in the market too buy one.

Jim Belcher of Belcher Bows had some very old Yew...cut in the old country a while back. Don't know if he still has any but I bet he could fix you up. He make a great longbow called union jack too.

You have a PM
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I live in the land of yew. Just came back from our gathering Stick and Sage, you shoulda seen some of the tight ring yew there. Ted Fry or Strunk are both good guys with a wealth of knowledge, I've met them both and worked my first self bow with Ted.

There's a few yew bow guys but most don't build traditional english longbows.  The one who I know does is Jay StCharles at selfbow.com  He also harvests his own yew.

I have a few of his bows including one I built in his bow building class.  Lot's of fun and an excellent bow at the end of the day.
I find the older I get, the less I used to know!
