cresting over dried gasket laquer?
« on: June 07, 2013, 02:07:00 PM »
I have been using testors/ model master enamels over my poly-crylic shafts for 3 years now. I am looking at trying gasket lacquer on my next shafts. is there any problem using the model master/ testors enamel over top of the gasket lacquer for cresting?

thanks!

Good question. But may I ask why crest over the Gasket Laq.? Why not under the Laq? Either way I am interested also.
Is that finish you use water based? That may be an issue also.

I believe the gasket lacquer will eat off the enamel creating I use.

I am open to other things, but my restores enamel paint comes out really nice.

My experience with Testors paint and white GL is that there is no problem at all. Never have had any type of compatibility issue and have done quite a few like this.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Testor's enamel or acrylic both work well over several coats GL.  Show us how your arra's turn out.

That's the way I crest my arrows.  Testors over colored GL and then clear GL over the Testors cresting.

Enamel/polyurethane goes over lacquer but lacquer does not go over enamel or oil based polyurethane.

I have used Testor's enamel for cresting for 40+ years and always over my finish.

One can not get the very fine pin stripes in silver or gold and then dip something over it that doesn't run those stripes.

Gordon, what's this are you using to get the GL to go over the cresting without ruining it?

Lone Ranger, I just put the GL over the cresting.  For the silver and gold stripes, I have to let the cresting dry longer. I make quite a few arrows and also have good luck with Model Master paint for cresting and it seems to dry a little faster. If you have trouble with the Testors, you might try it.

So you do one coat, let it dry, crest, let that dry really well then do several top coats over the cresting?

And the GL doesn't smudge the cresting all to pieces when you pull the arrow back through the gasket?

I do two coats GL. Crest with acrylic, let dry for an hour and then a couple more GL. Works perfectly.

I like Folk Art brand the best. I have used testers as well and it works too.

Sorry Lone Ranger, I went to an archery shoot and just got back.  Yes that's the way I do it and it doesn't smudge the cresting. The first time over the cresting, I go pretty quickly.  I'm sure if I leave it in the GL long enough, it would dissolve the cresting.

I've used the Model Masters Testor's for however long they've had them and have tried countless time to use the GL over the silver/gold pinstripes and without fail it smudges them. I built arrows for sale for over 35 years-all that time using Testor's Model Master's enamel for cresting and the only thing I found to protect the crest is to spray polyurethane and even then you can't put on too much. The solid colors are not a problem at all to GL over-just the gold and silver enamel used for fine pinstripes.

How do you do the gold or silver then? Spray a top coat of something water based from a can?

Here is a picture of my cresting with GL over testors cresting.  I have good luck going over gold and silver.  Maybe it's because I don't do real fine pen stripes and I don't thin my gasket lacquer.

Gordon, your using a fine paint brush to apply the gold/ silver correct? I have used gold or silver pilot pens and they work ok too, but they also "smudge".

Thanks!

L.R. I use the fine paint brush.  I have tried the pens with poor results.  I'm surprised that everyone has trouble with GL over testors when the only time I have had any problems is when I didn't let it dry for a day or two and when I thinned the GL too much with acetone.
Good luck with your arrows.
