My bow sling for trad bows
« on: June 10, 2013, 01:42:00 PM »
Hi tradgang,

Recently I've just acquired my first trad bow. So since then I've been looking for minor trinkets to make my now feel more personal to me. I saw that a bow sling might be what I want to start with in trad shooting so I started looking for a compatible one. But my riser doesn't have a threaded insert for stabs (first gen blackswan riser), and a Kanati sling is way out since I don't know if I'll even use a sling in the future. What else could I do? I made my own.    :archer2:

My bow sling doesn't require a threaded insert or a rubberized riser grip to hold it in place. Best is that all the tinkerers out there can grad readily available supplies and start building one. The only thing I bought was a keychain clip for SGD$0.80 (I'm Singaporean).

So here is my sling, made of 550 paracord and a keychain clip.

I used a caterpillar/chain sinnet instead of the more common diamond stitch. This gives the loop something to catch on to hold the riser in place. A cobra stitch over the chain sinnet gives more support and is much more comfortable IMO.

This is how the keychain hook attaches back onto the sling.

I attached the sling in such a manner for my riser due to the angular shape. The edge prevents the sling from slipping.
If used on a regular 1 piece or a Bear T/D, I believe it will still work.

If used on a 1 piece like the toelke or a bear recurve, I believe this manner or attaching the sling will be more suitable.

The heel of most riser should be big enough to stop the sling from slipping too far I guess. If it doesn't work out, just use the a piece from the inner tube of a bicycle tyre and roll it around the area in contact. You can probably make this for under a dollar or two. And probably a day of two of tinkering should satisfy the child in most of us.

Hope I've helped!
Cheers!
Aaron

I have thought about a bow sling for tree stand use.  The fear of droping it could have me gripping hard.

That's a neat idea.  I'd be a little worried about the metal clip dinging up my riser though.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

I did have that concern too. But it doesn't matter too much for me.

A possible solution will be loosening the center stitch on the caterpillar sinnet so that you clip on the loose stitch with the sinnet between the clip and riser. In that way, there won't be metal contact on the riser.
Otherwise, you can always use paracord to tie a slip knot to loop over the sinnet instead of using a metal clip.
