Anyone have experience with heads up decoy for elk?

Curious if anyone has had good or bad experience with this elk decoy. My thought was to use one on a backpack elk hunt.
Thanks!

John... I knew about Tim's experience, but was hoping for some others to chime in. Being that they are light and fairly compact... it seems they could be "just what the doctor ordered" for a pack in hunt.
Kamm1004... thanks for the bump!

I'm all ears too, I think it seems such a goofy idea that many hunters are reluctant to try it. I have a spot in mind with a very short bow season and tons of elk. It would be a good spot to give it a go.

I asked Tim to get on here and give us his story. He called in a bull for another friend (Bob) while using one. If I remember correctly, they felt it held the bull's attention long enough to get a decent shot as the bull turned to leave.
Come on Tim... or Bob... I'd like to hear the whole story.
Thanks...

Been to Florida doing offshore kayak fishing.
If your hunting alone, it just makes since to have a decoy for elk. They are suppose to be able to pinpoint a call within 10 yards so I call around the decoy then position yourself in a position for the shot. They are expecting to see something when coming to the call . If you position the decoy in way that looks realistic , they are more likely to come within shooting range. Of coarse, I modified my heads up making it more versatile . It is hard to find the right tree to place the decoy to with the clamp for the setup you want. I went with a staking system . I still remember the look the bull gave when he was about 8 yards, he could not figure out where the rest of the elk was.

I didn't have much luck with mine, but couldn't get it situated correctly, then the last week we went up and probably had bulls coming in the right way for it to be effective, we forgot it at home, I will be trying it again this year. I'm going to PM The Night Stalker and ask him to post a pic of how he deploys his!

I have used several times, twice with luck with other weapons, but have had had mixed luck trad bow hunting, seems to keep them in area longer and curious, but they seem to shy away from coming in close enough for a bow shot! I did try then setting up about 70 meters in clearing behind me and anticipated the direction the elk would come to the call, worked a little better but still was not able to make a good shot (two opportunities at marginal shots, but that's not me.)

I will have to take a pic of the decoy. I use a lightweight fiberglass rod, you can buy them at lowes, I use a yellow electric fence insulator to attach the decoy to the fiberglass pole. That way I can stick it in the ground. I like putting mine behind a pine tree or an obstruction so it looks like the cow is looking from around the tree while her body would be behind the tree. If you get a response, set the decoy, call then move towards the bull and set up. If you get one close, their focus will be on the decoy. It's better with two people simply because the caller can be close to the decoy.
