buying whole cedar logs?
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:24:00 PM »
haven't done a search yet, but I am thinking of building a bow rack similar to ones I've seen on here. does anyone know of a company that will sell and ship a single cedar log, possibly in two pieces? maybe 3-4" in diameter average width. I don't live in a big enough place to have a fancy wood supplier, and I really don't have time/means to cut and dry my own (i'm off for the summer).

is that sort of impossible, or does that sort of business exist?

Lots of lumber is available from online sources, including the big auction site.  I just did a Google search for cedar lumber and came up with a bunch of sites to check out.

What Whip said. Shipping will probably suck, though.

Look into native woods, good stuff all around us. If you have trouble finding something other than Cedar that will work for ya, get a hold of me on here and when I cut some I'll put some aside.

Just need to see finished pics is all I'm askin'...   :readit:

Are you looking for Eastern Red Cedar? I cut some branches 2 years ago for DonD to use for a bow rack. I should have some left over?? I cut branches with some character for him to put in a corner, cut 45 degrees on both ends and add hooks or wood pegs to hang bows.. I may be cutting down a tall straight ERC soon and making some 12/4 boards from it..

Atlantic white cedar grows in your area.  You should be able to find a mill that can set you up with some.

There is a mill near me in Indiana they will ship custom pieces I believe. It's good quality, I have bought some from them in the past. Here's a link to their web site.
