Do you think I am close?
« on: July 07, 2013, 05:05:00 PM »
Hey there,

I've been tuning my GT 35/55's to my Big Jim Buffalo. Tell me what you think of this: 29.75" arrow, 145gr tip, 11.4 on the insert. 3X5 AMG's. The bow is 51#@29. I draw to 27.5". They seem to be flying really well at 20 yards bare shaft. right down the middle when I release well.

I'd love some input.

If they are flying well bare shaft then it sounds to me like you are all set!

Proof is in the pudding! That is the shaft I would have suggested. Fletch one up and shoot a broadhead, that would be the ultimate test.

If you would like to shoot a little heavier set up (just a thought)you have plenty of room for trimming of the shaft. You would be surprised at how little shaft removal it takes to add 50g of pt weight.

Very very close to what I shoot!  You say they bare shaft well....hmm...if so,  great.   Point seems light though is the only thing Id have to say....I use a 200 gr field or a 125 gr Ace broadhead epoxied to a 75 gr steel adatpter (200gr!)  This has me at under 10 gpp,  considered LIGHT by most Id say.  But I get awesome flight, great speed and it will kill anything Id need it to around these parts.  If you have anything in 200 gr laying around,  give it a try just for kicks....you may like the results.  And that little added weight will do you some good! Give you better grains per pound!

Thanks Jim and LookMomNoSights. I have 145,175,200, and 225 points laying around. I'll give the 175 a try.

Do you think the shaft needs to be shorter?

I would NOT shorten that arrow if you are right on or very close now....play with the point weight a tad just to see.

Now like Big Jim said,  if you wanted (now or later) to shoot a heavier arrow,  you have lots of room.  Cutting a 1/4 off the shaft can make a world of change....you'd have to go front heavy for sure then.

Just play with the point weight on your current length first. Once you have your shaft set up to shoot a point in the 200+ range (for carbons!),  you'll have many more options/configurations for broadheads.   These days it seems having 200 up front is not that heavy....Id say on the light side!  Again,  for carbon shafting.

Well,

I put 175 up top. It didn't seem to affect the spine very much. When I release well, they fly great.

This is very weird. I use the "calculator" and it is sort of contrary. But, seeing is believing I suppose. I am going to let my arms rest and give it a fresh tune tomorrow.

Thanks!
