Best states for DIY Antelope hunting?
«
on:

At some point in the next few yrs, im hoping, with a couple others to do a DIY Antelope hunt.
No doubt theres a lot of homework involved before ever going, but just getting pointed in the right direction for starters would be a huge help.
Thoughts and opinions encouraged.
Thanks Paul

I echo the above, Wyoming. The numbers seem to be in the favor of a succesful trip. However I have been doing some homework myself for the Nebraska National Forest. Keep us posted on your adventures.

Where you get drawn. N.M. Wyo. Az, Id. Mt. I would spend my time in the high precentage draw areas, and do my scouting. I believe the first three my choices, but if I drew OR, ID, or NV I would be happy. NV has the greatest amount of public land. But AZ, Wyo, Ut. have lots of public land.

Will do, Jeremy.
Im still in the very early stages of my planning and research, but i figured who better to ask, than tradgangers who have been there and done it.
Id love to do a fully guided hunt, but unfortunately my budget just wont allow for several thousands of bucks to make that happen, so the next best thing is a DIY hunt, besides, the satisfaction of getting it done on a DIY hunt really appeals to me.
It will take a lot more work, but the pay off, win or lose just seems more fulfilling.

I see a lot of research, maps and topos in my future... this is gonna be fun!
No doubt the first time out will be a learning experience, as luck will play a huge role , but the enjoyment and experience gained will be priceless for round 2.

Great pics and fine goats Joe!
Along with the maps and topos, I need to include strategies, IE, blind, stalk. water hole ETC.

Do not overlook NE. Focus your research in the NW and N/central part of the state. There's a fair amount of public land and NO draw! Gaining access on private for antelope hunting is not as difficult as it is for deer especially archery.Plus, coming from Indiana you'll save 4 hours drive time which turns in to more hunt time!!!

Water holes are the only way to hunt unless you spot and stalk but Antelope have great vision and it's tough sneaking up on them in the open prairie.
Find a good water hole, look to see where all the tracks are around the hole, setup a pop up blind or dig a pit 15-20 yds away...bring a good book, plenty or water/gatorade and pray for very, hot, dry weather.
Home made windmill/ladder stand my buddy built. I wore a white camo while sitting on that cooler all day for 3 days. Antelope never look up....
Took this photo from the truck...this guy was chasing a doe and "posed" for us...

wyoming and colorado have my bids. if you drive on the interstates you'll see more speed goats than cars or people. You'd be surprised how many ranchers would love to have you shoot them on their property since they can be quite damaging to fences. The rancher that gives me permission especially hates that they eat up all the mineral blocks for his cattle, I dont mind though, makes them grow bigger racks.
