Carbon spine for 51# longbow?
«

I have a new longbow shipping today and was going to pick up some more arrows for it. Arrows will be the Beman ICS bowhunters. Bow is cut to center, 51# @ 28 and I draw a hair over 28. I've always shot 400 spine with 300-320 up front, but I'm looking to back down to 200gr. up front. I'm guessing the 500 spine would work, but looking for some real world reassurance from you all. Thanks.

I shoot a bit less poundage but CE-150's cut to 29" with about 200 grains up front work great for me. Best of luck.

I have a 51# 3-piece that shoots well with Carbon Express Heritage 90's (.530 spine I think) with 125gr up front.
They are a little light for some folks, I'm sure, but they are fast, quiet, and accurate.

What length arrow are you going to be shooting? If you're @ 30" or less the 500 would problably work. Any longer than that might be cutting it pretty close.

Echo, about 30". I can't go below 29, but don't want to leave them full length either. I've done that with some overspined carbons and didn't like how they rode in the bowquiver on some shorter bows.

Second d.Key choice. My 51# Shrew CH liked CE150's with a STOS 160 + brass insert for a little over 200 grn. 28.75" length.

Just leave your arrows full length to start with and see what happens.
Even a .500 spine carbon is stiff when it`s short.
Several bows at my house in the 50 lb range shooting full length Gold Tip 35-55, and ICS Bowhunters in .500....perfect tears thru paper with 175 grain heads and total weights right around 500 grains.

Todd, leaning towards the 35/55's. Got to shoot a few 500's from my 50# whip that had 150gr. up front and fletched shafts flew and grouped great. Overall they seemed more consistent than my 400's. Couldn't bareshaft, (not my arrows!) so I thought I'd see what the gang here recommends.

I shoot 50# at my DL and use nearly full length GT 55/75's. GT says they are supposed to be .400 spine but the spine tester says they are stiffer, like .360-.380. I have 250gr up front. If I was to go any lighter on front end weight I am pretty sure I would have to go to a lighter spined shaft.

my opinion is if its a soft longbow I say Heritage 90's with stock insert and 200gr point,, my 48# St Charles thunderbird & 53# Baraga both bare shaft tune this 29" arrow perfect.... if its a hard shooting longbow then bump to the 150's cut to 29 1/2 with 100grain insert and 125grain point and start there,, you might have to go up or down on the brace from here while listening and feeling the bow to fine tune.
can't comment on anything else, I only use heritage shafts.

Mike,
I love the Heritage 150's for that weight bow. But if you want heavy arrows the 250's cut to the length you want will probably need at least 250 gr. up front. Should get you into the mid 600's of total weight.

Thanks for the input. I ordered some Beman ICS hunter 500 spine. If I have to I will drop some point weight, (been itching to use the deltas anyway!).
