New Guy Here
« on: July 24, 2013, 08:28:00 AM »
Hello from Alabama, my name is Mike. I was referred to the tradgang by a friend who has successfully convinced me how thrilling and rewarding traditional archery can be.  I am looking to get into traditional archery.  I have bow hunted for many years now and have loved every second of it, so much so I am looking to add another challenge to the game by using a stick and string in the literal sense.  That being said I am looking to purchase a relatively inexpensive recurve to get the feel of shooting without a release and standard compound equipment.  I am open to all suggestions.  I have learned just from listening to the stories of my buddy's hunts that there is a significant learning curve associated with traditional archery hunting.  I look forward to becoming a resident here and learning the sport.

Welcome to the gang. I just ordered a bow for my fathers 71st birthday. After researching, reading and watching for a month or so I went with Maddog Archery (he is listed in the bowyer section). I believe it to be the value per dollar you can purchase a custom made bow for and Mike has been very responsive to any and all questions and taking the order. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Welcome!  There is much to learn and this is a great place to do it.  Decide what you can afford, then research bowyers or watch the classifieds further down on the site.  Most will advise you to start light on bow weight.  I started at 50# when switching from an old 70# compound.  I had no trouble, and plenty enough bow for deer.  Some would suggest #45.

Welcome!

I had a similar path as yours and was told to look at a Samick Sage, new $130 and used even less. Great advice and great bow to start. Find out if it is for you, then the sky is the limit as you upgrade!!!

Secondly, great advice to start lower wt, I too started 45# which, BTW, should be enough for just about all game here in North American, maybe not enough for the dark continent!

Enjoy!

Welcome!  Sage or Maddog great options.  Or go used from a trusted seller.  45 is plenty.  You could also do two sets of limbs on the Sage.  45 main set and a set of 60's to build your strength.  Have fun and keep at it, try to shoot as often as you can, even just a couple arrows is fine if that's all there's time for, but be dedicated.  The rewards are great!  You'll never miss the wheels once things come together for you!

Welcome to you. I won't add to the advice about bows but would like to add something. Take a look at some of our sponsors above and get a feel of what you like.

Welcome! I suggest trying a Longbow out before buying a Recurve. Not a thing wrong with Recurves. Just saying try both, just for the experience of both.  Have fun, rat'

Welcome from Michigan   :campfire:

You can't go wrong with an old or new Bear Grizzly, very good bows for the money.

Maddog is a heck of a deal, too.
