Cresting How To " Follow along "
« on: September 02, 2007, 04:33:00 PM »
As I was getting ready to dip and crest some shafts for the upcoming season I thought I would share how I dip and crest my shafts.I know wraps are very popular but some still prefer to dip and crest there arrows.Over the next couple of days I will take some pics and show how I do it.The set of shafts this time are 2018 legacys but this will work with any shafts. Now lets get started,I use a Arrow specialties crester, latex house paint for the dip and testors model paint.
  More to come

First scuff up the back end of the shaft with some steel wool,Clean up with some Alcohol 90% Now mark were you want the dip to end this time it will be 8 inches. You can make in a little shorter or longer does not matter.I have a dip tube but you can use a coffee can or a piece of pvc tube.Dip the shaft and hang to dry I like them to sit at least 24 hours. This rack is made up from scraps I had laying around.

Next I'm laying out the pattern on a piece of paper taped to the crester with a pencil,Now you can copy some arrows that you have seen or make up your own pattern here's were you can get a little creative.

what do you use to glue on your feathers and how well does the house paint hold up to a lot of shots and rough treatment?

ED:
I have a question. If you use latex house paint for crown dip and testors hobby paint for cresting, why do you have that can of LACQUER thinner in the picture???

Another shot.

After all colors are on I let the shafts sit for a couple days you want the testers dry before the next step.

Ok, I feel better now. It did not click that you were doing aluminum shafts.

After letting the shafts dry real good I dip the shafts in Polycrylic water-base,Once again let dry a few days and ready to fletch.Use duco glue,So there you have it cresting the cheap way.Now in the dead of winter grab a cup of coffee and have at it and have fun,Thanks >>>--> ED
