Taking my son on elk trip
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:56:00 PM »
Well after much thought I have decided to take my 12 year old son elk hunting with me this year.My two buddies and I are not back packing in this year,we rented a yurt in unit 6.We have hunted this area two years in a row a couple years ago.My son will not be hunting elk ,he is not shooting enough weight ,but he will be getting a small game license.I told him he had to get in shape if he wanted to go,and to my surprise he started running every other day {better then sitting around playing x box}.Elk hunting is not the best in the area but to us its more then the kill.Colorado is some beautiful country and just being out there is an experience I hope he will always remember .I will take pictures and try to figure out how to post them after we get back.We are leaving September 7 and I cant waite to share this with my son.

Good Man!  You got it right Dad!  I'll be there in 8 years with my son (4 1/2 yrs.).  You'll cement a life time bond of trust, love, courage, friendship, hard work, cooperation, etc.     :campfire:

Have a blast and be patient!  Another so many years he'll be packing your elk out    ;)

Look forward to your story.

Kris

Glad you are getting out there with him. Great memories to come. So many people wait so long to get their children out on the "big trips" and then they are grown and gone. Way to go Dad.

I elk hunted with my son last year... he is 34 years old. We have a great relationship, largely due to taking him afield when he was young.

It's one of the best investments you can make toward a lifetime relationship.

Good luck and God's speed!

Oh man, you guys are going to have a blast!  I can only imagine getting to go on an elk hunt when I was 12....back then a spike buck was BIG game and elk hunting wasn't even in my imagination yet.   Have fun and share the stories with us!

Awesome.  My dad took me with him to tag along when I was 9, horseback, just he and I and a gnarly old guide.  Best week of my life and repaid in full when my brothers and I took him back to CO. in 2011.  This "investment" of yours is priceless.

Good deal.
Have him bugle and cow call to be a major part of the action.
Encourage him to shoot a few grouse.
He should remove the ivory teeth, help dress, and pack out as much meat as he is comfortable with to be a serious part of the team.
Good luck!
