Who to go to?
«
on:

I am new here, and I live in Milan Michigan. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of a good place I could go to and shoot a couple of recurves, and longbows. I have not made up my mind yet as to what type of bow I want... a longbow, or a recurve so I need some info on the pros and cons, and where I can go to shoot some.
Thanks!!

If you can wait until January there is a big Traditional expo in Kalamazoo where there will be a lot of bowyers.

The good news is there are a ton of traditional archers in the Detroit area. The bad news is you are a month late to catch any trad shoots that I can think of.
My shop is in Sturgis, about 2 hours from you, maybe a little more. I think there is a shop in Jackson with a decent stock of trad equipment but I cannot remember the name. 3Rivers is closer to you than me and they used to let you try bows but now that they have the Saturday only hours I don't know what they offer. Jim Belcher is a bowyer and is in the Brighton area. He might be the closest. I can't find his phone number right now.

If I were you I would go to an archery club or even an indoor range and talk to people there and I am sure you wouldn't have any trouble having as shot with recurves and longbows. The big expos are good to go to and see all of the bows on display and have a shot with them...Glenn...

A typical progressin is to go from the compound style to a recurve first mostly because of the handle styles being simular. With todays longbow designs having a lot of choices in the more hybrid designs more are jumping the progression.
There is no way anyone here can make the choice for you. You need to get where there are folks with bows you can try. Most stick shooters are very friendly when it omes to letting someone shoot their bow. Since the hunting seasons are comming in the 3D shoots and fun stuff are slowing down.
find the closest shop carrying a trad line and go visit.
