Fall Turkey Quest
« on: July 29, 2013, 07:19:00 PM »
Turkey pursuit is both my enkindled passion and torrid demise.Fall hunting harvests, for me, have been far superior as compared to the stimulating spring pursuits.

A little reconnaissance revealed an area being heavily utilized with over 4X the sign of what I had considered excellent in the past. This food source may continue to be productive all year around.

Nothing is certain other than the desire to be there opening day and to turn loose a Big 3.

The Fall turkey  hunting opportunitys around here  far exceeds the deer & I have decent deer hunting. You can literally get on birds every time you step into the woods, makes for some fun hunting & a chance to learn alot.

Good luck on your quest.

I'm finally going to try it this year. I've said it so many times in the past that I was going to, but this year I'm going to do it. God bless.

Last year I didn't buy one and had more sightings. Usually get one and don't see any. They are tough to draw on in a deer stand.

I'm looking forward to fall season this year too.  Our lease is loaded with turkeys and I got some payback that needs to be handed out to some hens that cut me off a bunch of times this spring.

I have a fall turkey season and two unfilled tags... really want to get after them this year but I am mostly only familiar with Spring tactics.
couple of question:
Is it possible to call birds in in the fall (besides the kee kee run) and can or does a guy use decoys in the fall?  thanks!

jwhitetail...

Have called in fall birds using clucks, yelps, gobbler clucks, gobbler yelps and purrs.
Note: Kee kees, and Kee Kee runs have worked best for me when I have successfully scattered a flock.

If crops are in the fields and I am hunting burn boundaries, I don't used decoys...my most consistent and successful set-up.

If hunting burn boundaries and crops are harvested, then I have often had success with decoys. Note: Gobs have not in my experience come to the hen decoys. Jake decoys with an installed horse tail long beard have proven effective.

If hunting the woods, then I normally hunt the area to assess activity prior to employing any decoys. If I find gobbler activity, then I am going to try the dirty bird this year.

Thanks for that info Friend.  Couple of things you mentioned I can put to work in the ag lands that I hunt here for these Merriams.  Much appreciated.

I have always had better luck with Turkeys in the Fall.  Once I locate a flock and get them scattered, I call like an old hen and they will come in to get back together.  This only works on young turkeys.  Those old gobblers are a different story.    :archer:

I've called a couple in, in the fall, close enough to get some shots off. I just basically mimicked, with my diaphragm call, whatever sounds they were making, and it has worked so far...Now if I could just calm down and make a good shot....

Thank you for the wishes of good fortune.

Perhaps a worthy story will unfold. Most of my cherished memories and experiences have resulted from nom-harvest hunts.
