Which dye for dying feathers?
« on: August 03, 2013, 04:31:00 PM »
Ok guys I have used the kool aid method and did not like the results, after a month or so the kool aid starts to fade. So which commercial dye do you recommend for a good permanent color?
Thanks

I too have used Kool Aid.  But I also add a drop or two of food coloring and so far they don't seem to have faded.  Have you tried that?

I don't know if you tried it already, but if you add a little vinegar to the Kool-Aid it will help the color permeate into the feather better.

I used vinegar, but still not satisfied with the results. Looking for hot pink and bright yellow.
Thanks

No personal experience but I've read cake frosting die.  Saw it pretty cheap at Walmart the other day.

Try Orco fly dyes. Made for dying feathers. Lots of colors are available.

kool aide still works best for me but I use Dawn dish soap first to clean the feathers,I know that probably takes some natural oils out with steaming hot water but it also makes the dye last,It's a 3 step method for me,Dawn,Hot water rinse and Kool aide, and I make the kool aide dye strong maybe 3 packs per batch with a little vinegar  and good colors are limited, red, green, orange, blue. It also must be "almost" boiling water..

acid dyes - Amazon.com.  Acid dyes are for dying proteins (hair/feathers) whereas many other dyes are for dying cellulos (cotton).

The Great northern dyes have worked very well for me.  Also, Rit fabric dyes.

Tie two birds together; though they have four wings, they can not fly.
