Small food plots, big results!
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:53:00 PM »
Last year was my first, real, honest full blow food plot, got lots of activity right away. 2 weeks ago, I churned up the 1/3 acre plot again, sowed and dragged it. Stuff is coming up like gangbusters, Turkeys done wearing it out, had 3 hens and 18 large poults in it, and 12 adult turkeys in 2 different groups, same day. I had a nice buck by his tracks, and the next night just before dark, watched a HUGE 10pt and 12 Point come out into it. These bruisers were each between 150 and 170" and I am being conservative. I was looking thru a 60x power spotting scope, so got a great look at them, high and wide, both had 3-5 inches on each side of their ears, inside spread, both had long tines, 12-14 inches G2 and G 3"s!!! We are supposed to get rain, so I fertilized it today. If you have never really done a plot, I urge you to try it, for $30 or less, you can make a great season happen.
None of the good bucks I had on trail cams last year were killed, 7 of them, saw them after season on cams, got several sheds, should be a great year. Wife and I last night went by 4 different spots within 1/2 mile of my house, we hunt all these, and we saw 11 different bucks, 6 does out. Tonight we saw 4 bucks only, but they were different bucks!! Five weeks from today it opens here, come on man!

... and this is when to grab the semi-auto .30-06.  Fill the freezer in one morning, then enjoy bow-hunting for trophy bucks the rest of the year.

This will be my first year trying a food plot.did you do the soil samples or did you just brake ground and plant?

I just used round up, then disc'd heavily, sowed then drug. I fertilized yesterday, rained good last night, should give it a jump on the wildlife.

Hey Jim, can you go through everything you did to create such a productive turnip plot?

I live in a rather unique area of MN. Bluffs and hidden coulees. There is ag land all around me and when they harvest the crops those big ag fields are just waste lands when it comes to food for wild life.

I try to pick foods that are high in nutrition  and can handle heavy foraging.

here is a 1/2 acre clover field that the deer flock to

there are no short cuts if you want a great end result.  Proper soil prep, good seed , the proper amount of fertilizer and weed control is paramount to a food plot the deer will not over graze.  Of course mother nature has to supply some rain and sunshine in the proper amounts too.

here is a forage bean field that the deer are over grazing.

but just over the hill is yet another bean field that is doing much better because the deer have full stomachs when they leave this one.  So that this field has food in it when the season arrives, I have just today broad cast Rape in between the rows and you can see i/2 of the field on the far end has just been planted as well.

plan out your plots. don"t skimp on good seed and fertilizer. make sure you get your soil tested, up the PH if you have too and you will have good end results

Littlebigman I hope you do a post of your season again this year, it was a great read last year that I looked forward to. You do have a little slice of heaven there in MN.

We have some large food plots that get a lot of activity, but we also plant some small ones , especially in areas that are well protected and harder to access. Some of the small ones we get a lot of bucks , I think its cause of the cover.
