Finally! (Wensel Woodsmans)
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:20:00 PM »
I've watched the videos and read tons of posts on sharpening these things but could never get them scary shaving sharp. I could get them plenty sharp enough to hunt with but was really frustrated that I couldn't get them as sharp as I wanted.

Well I sat down with the determination to figure it out today and I did! I really paid attention to making sure the blade was perfectly flat on the file(it's easy to let them rock)and paid close attention to the pressure applied on each stroke.

I did a dozen today and the first 3-4 took awhile but once I had it figured out the rest were fast and easy.

Here is what I did.
1. Mark the edges with a marker.
2. Held blade in my hand and used a file till all the marker was gone.
3. Layed file down and pushed head into file 2 strokes each side with medium hard pressure, went around twice.
4. Same as above but with much lighter pressure.
5. Same as above with very very light pressure.
6. Went to a "red" DMT diamond stone and repeated steps 3-5.
7. 1200 grit wet/dry sandpaper mounted to a piece of 2x4 with a little flitz polishing compound on it..about 3 very light strokes on each edge twice around.
8. Leather mounted to a 2x4 with flitz again and a  couple passes over each edge.

The edges are like mirrors and they are so damn sharp you can't touch them..I have little tiny cuts all over my finger tips to prove it.

Did two Snuffers I had laying around with the same results.

Hint..do steps 6 & 7 till all the file marks are totally gone. It should be a polished edge with no visible file marks.

I like those file marks. Its like micro-serrations. I take a file and rub a stroke from the back up to the point; three times, then flip to another side. When it'll pop hairs off my arm, I'll touch it up a little more; one stroke per side. Then I'll go back and touch it up with a rough surface wet-stone. Real sharp boogers by then.

Good work on yours man.

i used a file then went with a knife steel. pulling the head front to back and flipping over. used 8-9 strokes for each side. shaves the hair off my arms. they are a WICKED looking head.
