Nock problem? or Glue problem? Need some wisdom please
« on: August 09, 2013, 10:12:00 PM »
Finished my wood hunting arrows for the year a couple of weeks ago. Started practicing with them and my nocks are coming off.

I've built many wood arrows and always use Duco. The only thing I did different this time is instead of Bohning Classic nocks I used some with a mild snap throat, Bearpaw.

Anyone with this experience? Do I need a stronger glue for these nocks? Feathers are stuck just fine.

Thanks for any help

Eric

Hey Eric, I've used Bohning Fletch Tite Platinum for gluing nocks on paint, wood or aluminum.  I always have to crack the nocks off when they need replacement. Is there an excessive amount of finish on your nock tapers? Maybe rough those up with some sandpaper.

I seem to remember a thread from way back saying that the Bearpaw nocks required you to use the Bearpaw glue.
'Course, I could be barking up a dead tree.

Appreciate the responses

This thread from back in 2010 shows the exact same issue you're having:

Guy, thank you very much. Interesting.  If my test with FletchTite doesn't work, well, think I'm done with those nocks...

I used and still use Bearpaw nocks for years on my woodies. I glue them with Saunders NPV and never had any problems with it. As a matter of fact, it is a hell of a job to get them off when you need to replace one.
Make sure your tapering is ok, so that it fits exactly. I make a small ring of glue in the beginning of the nock, put it on the tapered shaft, press it firmly and turn it around so the glue is spread well. Make sure that your nock indicator is in line with your cock feather. Remove the excess glue that sometimes comes out.

I really think you must be doing something wrong, or maybe some glues react with the material of the BP nocks. That is certainly not the case with Saunders! I made 100-dreds of them without any problems.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]

Didn't I read that Duco, along with so many others, changed their "formula" so "huffers" can't get high and damage their brains???

(Which came first, is my question?)

Seems I read there here some 2 years or so back! Same with other glues like Barge Cement.  I can't get barge to stick worth a tinker's hoot now.  I still nurse an old tube of Duco for a few things, but use NPV for fletching and most everything else.

I am becoming a Saunders NPV fan. IT works on bare carbon shafts and bare alum. shafts with no issues. I have also used this glue on cap wraps and so far so good. Time will tell. As for the hop heads sniffing the glue, let's remove all the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Is the Saunders a quick set formula?...

Selfnocks never come off and are way more durable than plastic nocks.

Not everyone has the skill or the inclination to do a well made self-nock. I'd rather see a plastic nock used than a half-assed self-nock.

I use a lot of Duco and I haven't noticed any change in its performance. Eric is only having this issue with Bearpaw nocks, everything else is fine. I think that points more to the nocks than the glue.
Yes, Barge cement changed its formula but that is really neither here nor there as it is not the glue being discussed here.

So last night I glued on 2 Bearpaw nocks 1 with Duco again and 1 with Platinum.  I also glued a Marco snap on with Duco.

Let them cure overnight.  Pulled the Bearpaws off with my fingers.  The Marco is tight as a drum.

I think the Bearpaw is a good nock, just may have to use a different glue as some have suggested.

Thanks for all responses, especially Guy for giving me that other thread.

This may save some other guys some headaches.

Happy Hunting, Eric

Bearpaw might have release agent residue on the inside...take a Q-tip with alcohol and clean them good...then try before you give up on them...
