What else is there ?
« on: August 14, 2013, 08:52:00 PM »
We all know about deer and elk and pigs.  Even sheep and goats (Mt and Prairie).  What other kinda stuff is there to hunt, including / especially smaller game. How about wierd, unknown or underhunted stuff ?  I am especially interested in south and east, but hey. .  any direction is fine.

Javelina, great little targets, aren't as bad eating as branded.
You probably need to go south and east from your location.

Certainly not unknown nor are they weird, but it seems like rabbits and squirrels are way under-hunted around here in MI. When I was a kid growing up (still trying to do that) that's what kids cut their hunting teeth on. Now I read about 10 year olds going to Africa and coming back with 4 or 5 EXPENSIVE trophies.

Jean-Vincent that is a muskrat.

I have also heard they eat pretty good.

I talked with a friend that traps just yesterday and he told me the pelts were bringing $8-10.

I was shocked because it's ways off from the $0.75 to $1.00 I got as a kid.

Chacalaca, never seen one, but it's a bird and they were listed in the hunting regulations in Texas when I was growing up. Not sure if I got the spelling correct but I always wanted to hunt them when I was a kid. Then there are the nutria in the south and don't forget snipe!
Just googled it, it's spelled chachalaca.

Not to get to far off topic but is that green pricing or skinned and dried?

Back to the OP, bowfishing is a joy. Plenty of carp to go around.

Peoria Ill has Aerial carp bow fishing. The Wabash River around here is full of them.

Gophers are fun to shoot.  They're a pest, so if you shoot them you're usually doing someone a favor.  And often you find colonies of them, so you can get a lot of shooting. I sure wouldn't eat them though.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.
