The "OK so now you got one" thread got me to thinking, what do you do if you don't drive a truck and don't really have access to one?
I drive a small economy car and so does the better half...

I recently bought my dad's old truck,but before that I drove a dodge neon for everything. I still have the neon,but use the truck now for hunting and other stuff. I got by just fine with just the car. I would have to have stuff hanging out the trunk and have to plan a lot better than I do now,but I got by. I think having to get by sometimes makes us come up with much more ingenious types of things.

Here's my hunting and everyday vehicle. I've got heavy duty trash bags and a waterproof tarp in case I get my first deer.

I suggest you think it thru BEFORE you need to haul a deer.  If nothing else, always carry a good waterproof tarp that you can wrap the carcass in to keep blood in, then put it wherever you need to.

In days gone by, I THINK it was illegal to transport a deer in WI in an area of the vehicle that was accessible to you (to keep you from snapping on a tag when the warden stops you) until it has the state tag on it.

Even economy cars can often be equipped with a small rear end carry rack for lighter loads.  Might be worth the expense.

I used to have a small Saturn sedan and once shot 2 deer the same day while hunting with my father-in-law. I had a large trash bag--the kind they sell in the fall for bagging leaves.
I folded the rear seats down, laid that bag out and crammed both deer into the trunk.

Of course, getting them out was a little more fun, since by then they had stiffened into a couple of pretzels, but hey, no blood in the car and my little car hauled more deer that day than my father-in-law's truck!

Hey Wannabe, I had the same Volvo and used it to haul my first three deer. Now that I have a pickup its a lot harder to lift a carcass over the tailgate. Some times smaller is easier.

Yup, bag and wrap them in a tarp and put in the trunk or backseat. I have a great and funny story for you and 100% true. I was 16 and it was my first year of gun hunting and I had a bud who lived 10 miles away and had some nice property to hunt. His younger brother, about 12 wanted to sit with someone, so I said he could come sit with me. Long story short, I shot a small spike, first deer with a gun. I drove a big boat of a car(mercury Marquis Classic) everyone said I had to keep the deer in sight so I could not put it in the trunk or backseat. Likea fool and laughing the whole time we tied it to the hood and used the mirrors to secure it. I was about 4 miles from home an coming down a big hill with a Stop sign at the bottom(yup you know) As I came to a stop the mirror on the driver side gave away and the deer slide off the hood and I actually ran over him!!        The next thing this guy stop and say "I saw the whole thing, he ran right out in front of you and ya nailed him!!" I was laughing as well as pissed off and said no, he was tied to my hood and slide off and he says no I saw it all. I had to show him the ropes and the gutted deer which now had been draggged twenty feet when I tried to back off of him. Needless to say the next one I shot, 3 days later by the way I put in the trunk and left his head hanging out with the tag on it and tied the trunk down over his neck!! Sorry for the long post but it is the gods honest truth and I still laugh my ass off everytime I think of those times in my life!! Shawn

I don't know who Semo's comment was directed too (I'm not gay and it's not a Prius) so I guess it wasn't me. That car is almost bomb proof! It's a 1989 and still going strong. Took it out for opening day yesterday and drove it all over the logging roads.

Start making friends with people that drive trucks! You could also rope it to the top of your trunk or roof. Then just take your car through the car wash to get any blood off.

my '67 chevrolet K-20 I drive everyday...plus my slide-in I built we call the "cabin"...4wd and 327 cubic inches of perfection!

slide in built from my carpenter job scraps...spent more $$ on the glass and resin than anything else...

Deer or Elk are usually boned and in a 120 qt.cooler...

I wondered the same thing Wannabe1. People at work used to give me a hard time because all I ever drove was a car. Then they started moaning when gas prices soared and all they ever did is drive their huge pickup to work and had never even hooked up a trailer or used a truck for anything other than running over a curb or two,but that's how it goes. I've learned a long time ago you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

I used to own an F-250 for many years until I quit having to haul cars for the restoration business a few years ago.  Now I have a CR-V to save on fuel and I'd rather spend my money on things like bows and more arrows. Tarp and trash bags for me or wrap it in a tarp and tie to the roof.  Not my preferred set up and I'd like another pickup one day but doesn't fit into the family's current budget or lifestyle.  Not having a pickup doesn't make one gay but thinking it does might surely make one ignorant at the very least.

On a more productive note...

I have hunted out of everything from a full sized Dodge truck to a Ford Escape.

Getting a deer on top of the Escape alone is a bear. I have some pulleys I keep in the back and can get it done...but it aint easy.

My favorite method is to knock on the neighbor farmers door and use his backhoe    

Kind of a funny story: I hunt near a Catholic Convent, and see and chat with the Sisters often. One night I killed a whopper. Drug it almost a mile, and I was whipped. I was so spent, I couldn't drag the deer into the bed of my truck.  3 Nuns, in full habit, helped me hoist the deer into my Dodge!
