« on: August 27, 2013, 06:41:00 AM »
gday guys, my border is ready to ship and i'm looking at using axis arrows for it. i'd like to use 250gr point, 100gr inserts and a 2.5" footing. that should bring me to about 740gr total with a the 300 spine. going to work??
i draw about 26.5-27"AMO.

what axis for 600gr upfront out of this bow?   :scared:  just blew your mind didn't i?

Have you looked at Axis FMJ Dangerous Game, they have a higher GPI and come in 250 and 300 spine.

Hi Clint

300 or maybe even 340 spine would be ok. I shot 400 spine axis with 225 grain up front and 2 x 100 brass inserts installed. That was out of a 65lb@28" toelke whip. It took me a while to tune them as I had to trim from the nock end and that meant re-fletching every time I made a cut to the shaft.

You are going to be hard pressed to get good flight with anything short of FMJ 250 or even 100 with that much up front.

The Black Douglas is a very high performance bow and at 70# it will be like shooting a 80+ pound anything else.

The BD have a sight window cut 5/16 past center,so first you have to build a thick strike plate, 3/16 thick for 5/16 arrows, maybe a little bit more for axis.

I am with Mike on this one. I am not sure you can get the 300 to fly like that.

Look at the 250 at least.

I think the 300 will be fine just cut it short, if you draw 26.5"s than cut it 27.5"s. I shoot Hex5's and tbey are only 51#s I shoot a ..500 spine with 190 up front. Give them .300s a go! Shawn

i'm using 400 axis out of my bob lee 57#@28" with 350gr upfront. they are cut at 30". just thought i'd give an idea of another arrow combo that works for me as comparision. i've found i tend to have weaker arrows than everyone suggests will work. people were saying 340 for the bob lee.
i'm hoping the 300 works for the 'normal' 740gr arrow out of the douglas.

Most recommendations I have seen for carbon arrows are usually overspined.  I'd give the .300s a shot

An arrow that is stiffer then Easton DG FMJ 250 is Gold Tip Kinetic 200 Big Game with a .200 spine. The Kinetic's are Gold Tip's version of an Easton Axis.

the shelf is cut 5/16" past center on latest black douglas DX riser so you will have first to build out the plate for 4+ mm first to be centershot.
300 spine should work up to 300 and + gr point

I don't know for sure what will work,  but my morrison ILF with carbon foam longbow limbs that are 82# @ 29", with the plate set up for centershot, is well tuned for 30" GT Kinetic 200 arrows with  525 grains total weight up front.  Based on that, I would say that these arrows would be much too stiff for your setup.  I would say if you are cutting your arrows fairly short like shawn is recommending, then the 300 spine might well work for you.  I guess you will be drawing something around 66-67#, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if 300 spine works for you.  Good luck.

this has been my experience too.

PDK25- what shafts are you using?

i'm hoping the 340's will work with the lighter setup and the 300's with the buff arrows.

Clint as stated up top, build your side plate out which will help in tuning of your intended weaker shafts. Good luck send some pics of Bloody arrows now
