I've been a used-bowaholic for good bit now, but slowly recovering. Last year I got ahold of a pristine Leon Stewart Slammer 3pc in a trade...I had never tried one at that point and didn't know how it would end up, but I had heard great things...well fast forward- for me it has been the best shooting bow I have ever tried. It always floated to the top when compared with everything else I've sampled, and there are some great bows out there. I even own a couple more that are also truly excellent, like a Habu, but for me the Stewart just pushes all the right buttons and she is my #1.
Well that original bow I traded for was a 16" riser, 66" overall 53@28 version of the LSS 3pc. Simply superb shooter in all regards. Super fast and super quiet.
Back in May I finally decided to take the plunge and make my first new custom bow purchase: have my riser refinished and have Leon build a brand new set of limbs to my exact specs to create for me the perfect Slammer 3pc.
I decided to go longer for 68" overall and 55@29 to match my longer than standard draw.
The final creation as arrived today sports olive ash burl back veneers with a light stain to darken them a bit, and curly maple belly veneers with a southern pecan stain to match, all over a hybrid core of 2 center laminations of tempered bamboo flanked by 2 laminations of maple. African sheep horn tips finish things off and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the color of the tips mimics the olive ash burl and they actually appear to fade together. Very cool effect.
It shoots as good as it looks, better than I remember actually. The bow is a real screamer but whisper quiet. It is the queen of the harem. As fine a hunting weapon as there is. If you haven't tried a Stewart, especially the 3pc, do it asap, you will be quite pleased to understate it. First hunt is September 18th and the Stewart will be heading to the woods...
