The Best Bowhunter in the last hundred years?

As I sit here watching Michigan finish off Notre Dame (boo!) I thought I'd post a question: who's the best? I was gonna say of all time, but I guess lets stick to the last 100 years or so. Howard Hill? Fred Bear? Art Young? I don't know, but more than just pure hunter, lets talk conservation and overall influence in archery. I like HH. What do you guys think?

I think that there are so many great ones out there that it doesn't really matter assigning one as the best.  It's not a competition.

As far as pure Hunter, probably a guy no one has ever heard of..

Fred Bear and HH were very influential but better self promoters and businessmen than hunters in my opinion.

But if I had to give a name I'd say Paul Schafer

Fred Bear actually answered this question in an interview not long before he died and plainly stated he didn't think it was himself.  He indeed named some guy nobody's heard of.  Can't remember the name.  The interview is on YouTube.

My guess would be someone no one ever heard of who had to hunt to feed himself and family to survive. The rest including me, hunt for sport and because we enjoy the challenge or in some cases to make a living. If we go home empty handed, we still survive.

The best? At what.....shooting, hunting skills, ethics or the whole package? I think there were and are great number of Bow Hinters out there that fit the bill to be at the top of the list. I can think of a few that are members of this site.

I think it has to be Fred Bear, considering that he really brought archery and bowhunting into the modern spotlight with films, TV, new production and lamination methods etc.

Tough and pretty subjective question.  Still I think the clear answer from my seat is Howard Hill.  Fred Bear is was a great man and a hero of mine for sure.  I just cant get past the image of a mob of fans storming Soldier Field to tear Howard Hill's outfit off him as a souvenir. ARCHERY ROCK STAR!!!  If that story isn't true don't ruin it for me by telling me.
