Progress report, Bighorns elk
« on: September 08, 2013, 02:10:00 PM »
Well boys and girls, just got in from a week on the mountain. It has been very hot and pretty dry for the beginning of elk season in my neck of the woods, so I started out by checking wallows. In my week there, they were not used, but had been worked previously. While checking this one, I had a cow face to face at under 20 yards on the trail coming to the wallow; no shot however.

This meadow was full of fresh moo cow poop, and the dirty buggers were all over the country, but I was still seeing some elk.

I worked a small stream, thinking that the elk might be as hot as I was, and low and behold, got into about 30 for over an hour and a half. There were at least 5 branch antlered bulls, and I listened to their bugling and the mewing of cows and calves for a long time, until they just walked away. I never was in range of a bull, and the only 'easy' broadside shots that I was offered were a couple of calves, so I passed with hope that a similar situation will present itself later. Here is the stream; it is full of brookies.

The forecast is for more warm weather for the next few days, but I will be heading back mid week and hope that the elk will still be there and maybe rutting. There are worse places to spend some time.

Sounds awesome!  Good luck and keep us updated with stories and pictures.
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Beautiful.  Thanks for sharing.  Was not able to go west this year.  Hope to again next year.  I love the mountains.
