Arrow size ?
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:03:00 AM »
I have a 60# howatt hunter and wanted to know what size aluminum arrow I should shoot with a 29" arrow, 150 grain head and 50 grain brass insert. I draw at 27.5 so without a scale I would guess im shooting 57 or 58 pounds but I have heard that these bows often come in a few pounds over the marked weight. I would like a finished arrow weight close to 575 grains. The charts only go to 190 grain points (chart said 2216 in 3 rivers catalog) but I will be at 200 with the brass inserts.

I ran a few arrows for you and the 2018 will put you at 580 grains, and very close on the dynamic spine requirements. Be sure and leave one or two unfletched shafts to verify for yourself, by bare shaft tuning.

2018s would probably work well.  I did not run any numbers through the calculators, but from many years of shooting aluminum, I would try some 2020s or 2117s at your specs in addition to the 2018s.  Good luck and let us know what you end up using.

X2 on the 2018's, I have used them for years with the same weight bow 60#, and have the same draw as you do. Mine are cut to 29" BOP with a 145gr head, and fly perfect for me.

Ten times on the 2020, great arrows if ya find them and at 29"s with 225 grains front should put ya balls on. Just switch to 175 grain point! Shawn

I had a 58# Bamboo Longhunter that liked 2117's, and I have a 59" Deathwish longbow that likes 2018's. I generally shoot 145 grain points on 29" arrows. I only pull @ 27" draw.

Sounds like there are a few different sizes I should try. Anyone know of a traditional shop in Michigan that I can go to and try arrows before I buy a certain size?
