I hunted a funnel connecting a thick bedding area and a large oak ridge. I got in my stand about 2:30pm. Everything felt right. The wind was perfect, didn't spook anything on the way in, and my trail cams revealed a couple good bucks using this funnel. About 5:30pm, this buck emerges from his bed not 50yds behind me. He was bedded there all afternoon in the high grass. He eventually walked through the funnel just as I had hoped for giving me a great 17 yard shot. I shot the buck exactly where I was looking but slightly misjudged his angle. I struck the back of his shoulder blade. My 225 gr grizzly broadheads broke his shoulder still giving me 8-9" of penetration. He hopped a few yards and crashed! I believe if I was using anything besides a single bevel broadhead, the arrow would not have penetrated adequately. I determined over the years that penetration surpasses a big hole in recovery success. I am glad I made the decision with the broadheads and stand location. I am so pumped!
