instead of ground blind, have you ever tried..
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:35:00 PM »
Instead of hunting out of ground blind, just wondering if anybody ever tried a low hanging loc on stand.. by this I mean packing a loc on stand in and just a couple ladder sticks and hang about 4-6 feet in some low coverage about 15-20 yds off some travel routes.. I thought this may be a quick and very maneuverable set up? Been thinking about this for some time . What you think ??

It would work as long as you had some pretty good cover to screen you and the wind was right.

I shot my biggest buck ever while sitting on a plastic bucket in front of a large evergreen tree. The buck was 12 yards away and could not make me out. Luckiest day of my life!!!!!

I do something close to that.

I am a paraplegic so I need to hunt off of an ATV ,so I set up with some camo cloth behind me and a small tree in front.

Once I am in place the only thing that moves are my eyes

It is a hard way to hunt but I have been lucky twice !!!!!   :bigsmyl:

sure just above and behind the top of a baby pine or low bush against a tree to put the stand on,, perfect..  but this is a good idea to be out of the snow too if the snow is down,, also traveling snakes if you have them. not sure but I have stands that are up only 8' just depends on the set-up.

I use to build with 2 x 4 by 8 foot high ladder stands and put the stand in between 3 trees. Always worked great the 3 trees block the setup stand from the eyes of the deer so it seems. I never felt that you had to be 20 foot or higher to hunt deer. I also always built a good seat in the trees.

I have done that many times if the cover is right or I'm in a group of 3 or more trees clustered together.

In the swamp, that is often the only way you can hang a stand, and it works, but you need the appropriate cover.

I believe I am going to try it this year. I hunt narrow thick wood lots between fields and a river

yes I have and with great success, most times only about 5'-6',  and shimmy up a leaning log. it gets me just above the brush or in it.

My dad hunted into his 70's like this. It worked for him. 8' was about it for him. We used 2 4' sticks.

All it would cost you to find out would be to try it. Heck it might work. The wind & lack of movement are almost as important as anything else. The worst you could do would be to waste an afternoon. No wait, time spent hunting isn't a waste it's an adventure. I vote try it!

I set my climber about 6' off the ground once. Just above the high brush, but below the low canopy. Pre-trad days, but I got a shot at a buck.

I tried this out of necessity a few years ago.  I found a natural funnel between two large sloughs. Lots of cat tails and small willows with tall grass. A ton of deer sign.

I could find only one tree that was barely big enough to hang a small home made lock on stand. The stand height was only about 6 ft high. Fortunately the wind was consistently blowing in the right direction. I went in a couple of mornings later and by 7:30 had rattled in 4X5 just like it is supposed to  work.

I have hunted a farm in Va for many years where the farmer has numerous stands no higher that 8 feet.  Lots of deer have been killed out of them.  I fins that it is sometimes easiler to get back cover in lower stands.
