Hi
I posted the picture of my Colo mule deer on 'Highlights' here is the story:
I slept in on my 15th day to hunt, (just plain tired and 9 lbs lighter) about 8:30am I decided to go check another area as I had seen no deer from my 'go to' stand. When I got to the area I found that much of it had be logged! It was a North slope so it had lots of rotten logs to shoot at. I must of shot 20 arrows while walking the 100+ yards across the logged area. When I finally reached the intact Aspens to my surprise there stood a deer 50 yards away, looking at me. I froze and in time she decided I was nothing. Well, she fed towards me, then at 30ish yards she turned broad side and looked away. My arrow was away, then everything became a blurr of motion. I feared I'd hit her a little far back.
I knew I needed to give her time.... oh, that is so hard to do. I decided to walk the mile in to my 'go to' stand and bring it out. Oh Crap!..My pad lock was rusted shut!
Well, I walked the mile back out. That took a little more than hour so I took up the deers trail. No blood on the ground at the point of impact so, I walked to the spot I last saw her and still no blood ...but from there I could see her laying dead 40 yards away...AND ALL GODS CHILDREN SAID...AMEN. In fact my arrow hit her just in front of the hind quarter as she was turning away so, it was a sharp quartering away impact(13" of penetration) It was probably all over for her in 10 seconds. I was only 1/10th of a mile from a road but 130 vertical feet down, in the logging mess. alone!
After I got her back to came and properly cared for I walked the mile back up to my Screaming Eagle stand with a can of WD40, that did the trick... again AMEN!
