What magazines besides Traditional?
« on: September 25, 2013, 12:33:00 PM »
My mother in law just asked me what magazines I wanted for a school fundraiser.  Does anyone subscribe to Bowhunting, Bowhunter, Outdoor Life, Field and Stream.  Any suggestions?

Bowhunter is not too bad, it will have a small trad section every month.

only other one i can tolerate is "Deer and Deer Hunting". haven't subscribed in several years though. just too much advertising push in most of them for my taste.

I subscribed to Bowhunter Magazine since volume 1, issue 2.  Recently sent them a letter requesting them to terminate my membership.  Bowhunter Magazine was the one mainstream bowhunting magazine that in the past refused to accept stories or advertisement for crossbows.  Times have changed.  Crossbow advertisements are now prominent in that magazine.  In addition nearly all their staff writers from the glory days are long gone.  It was a great magazine in its day...now it is just another bowhunting magazine on the book store rack.

I really enjoy Bowhunting World and they have a renewed interest in trad gear lately. Regardless of you position crossbows are just going to get more popular so don't let that aspect take you away from publications interesting to all bowhunters.

Thanks guys...I made the decision to go with the combo pack of 24 issues of Outdoor Life and Field and Stream for 24.00.  It went to a good cause and I still have my TBM to read cover to cover.

Bowhunter is the best. One of the editors is a trad guy as well as a few of their contributors so there is usually a good amount of trad stuff in there.

Bow and  Arrow hunting  mag. Denny Sturgis Jr.  has a traditional column I think is one of the best. I have not renewed my subscription for a while. So you may want to check to make sure Denny is still a contributer.

I subscribed to Bowhunting and Petersons Bowhunter Magazine just for something different this year.  I had been a loyal subscriber for years with Traditional Bowhunter, having every issue, but found myself letting my subscription expire a couple years ago with the changes in format.  I like the idea of getting something physical in the mail to read each month, but neither of the above mentioned magazines will see a renewal for next year.  They weren't bad, but just not great.
Of the other bigs not necessarily solely archery (Outdoor Life, F&S, etc), I always enjoyed Fur, Fish and Game most.  Maybe I will give them a try again.  I have tried some of the smaller pubs, trad world, prim archery, etc and just didn't find enough to keep me interested.
If you find a good one, please let us know!
Would definitely like to hear from more about Bow and Arrow.

I get Stick and String and it follows my tastes . . . mostly.  Traditional Bowhunter is still my favorite.

I use to get them all. I think Bowhunter is the best, followed by Bow and Arrow. Petersons Bowhunting kind of lost its luster and I could never get into Traditional Bowhunter Mag. Bowhunter just has a good mix of everything.

Deer and Deer Hunting is about it anymore.  Liked Bowhunter for many years, but it has gone with the rest of the herd plus recently started running xbow ads.  I'm done with them.

Traditional Bowhunter, Compton's A Walk in the Woods and Primitive Archer is about it for me. Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Bowhunter I have let go. The ads for ATV's, Viagra, Crossbows and non archery related stuff did me in.
