removing snake skin??
« on: September 28, 2013, 12:38:00 PM »
Hi  I put diamond back snake skin on my B/W long bow,  it looked great but after 6 years it is now getting 'ratty'. In places the edges are rolling up.  I used true bond wood glue. How do I get it off? or can I somehow repair the rolled edges?
   :help:

You maybe able to repair it by pulling up on the skin where its lifting and apply some tight bound 3. Youmay need to use a tooth pick topuah the glue up under the skin. Then get the blue or green painter's tape and rap the limb to hold the glue while drying. I would let it sit for no less than twenty four hours before removing. I may wait an extra day before removing. Then I would reseal the whole skin.

Did you sand the back of the bow before you put the skins on ?

Put a warm damp cloth on the lifted edges. It will rehydrate the lifted skin and you can then glue it back on without giving it a crinkled raised look due to dry shrunken skin. For small areas like edges I use super glue. It will glue wet skin and you simply rub it under the skin(once rehydrated) with a toothpick and press from inner limb towards the edge. Keep your fingers moving and they wont stick.
Do a 4" area at a time. The bow is ready to shoot 10 minutes after you glue it.
If you don't want to refinish until after hunting season to keep your bow in use, cover with a good floor wax like Butcher's wax. Or even mink oil/pitch blend.
When ready to refinish, turpentine takes the wax off.
