Home Made Arrow Shafts......
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:39:00 AM »
I was wondering what some of us make our own Arrow Shafts from. I've made some from Ash, Yellow Pine, and even Laminated some out of various woods. I'm thinking about trying solid Birch( just cutting dowels without Laminating it). Any other suggestions? This is just to much fun!!!  :archer:
Sawdust, Wood Chips, and Shavings are as close to Potpourri as I get!!!!!!

Ive used river cane, tonkin cane, and bamboo. I picked up some hardwood dowels this week to give them a try.

My favorite is ramin dowels. After I cull through them at the store, I spine, weigh, etc. They make very tough arrows. But I hear that ramin won't be imported anymore, so I was thinking of trying birch too.

Another Vote for Ramin, or Whatever the Wood is they sell as Dowels at Wally World! You can do a Search, Google It, for Wood Dowels and if You can Buy them In Bulk, 100 pcs. or So, it all works out pretty well. They wear like Iron, and Straighten Up pretty quick with my Ace Roller Straightener!!
      And you will have some that will end up Tomato Stakes, or even Kindling for the next Campfire, But in the Long Run, just imho ya cant go wrong with them!!

I don't think you guys understand what I mean. I've done the Ramin Dowel thing ( and I do agree they are tough and fun.) But I'm talking from boards.

I've read Ferret's webpage, and now I'm going to harvest some rose shoots for arrows.  But none from boards.

I have turned shafts out of;

ash, yellow birch, white birch, sap maple, moose maple, douglas fir, white pine, popal, hop hornbeam, and spruce. Ya I think thats all of them. These have all been made from either buying boards at the lumber yard, or cutting boards from trees or bow staves.
make em pretty and shoot em straight.
