I've been shooting a longbow since the 80s but shot a recurve before trying a longbow at a local archery shop. Center punched the target w/each shot I took. It was love at first release.
Shot straight limbed bows and self bows til I got tendonitis in my L elbow so bad I couldn't p/u my TBM. Went to a r/d bow and it helped. Then to a 3p longbow and it helped more.
I still shoot all three. Love them all. A longbow is the perfect instinctive shooting weapon. So much fun.
There are reasons for different designs and you will grow an appreciation for each one. Enjoy!

Heh, I have always wanted to be a longbow guy. But I am a recurve guy. I can shoot a recurve sooo much better that I stuck with it against my desire to shoot the longbow.
In the end, you have to think about your OWN abilities, and do whats best for you. For me, it made sense to excel at recurves. Even though I yearned for long bow, I am damn good at shooting recurves. Longbows.....not so much.
Whatever makes it more enjoyable for you!
