I'll try not be long winded but here goes.
My trad journey started about 3 yrs ago when my uncle gave me an old herters recurve it sat on the shelf till January of 2012 rolled around and I attended the missouri bowhunters rendezvous here in central mo. I picked up a new string for it and a few other things. Unfortunately the bow had severe limb twist and was fun to shoot but very inaccurate. I had been bitten by the trad bug though and soon found myself ordering a Hoyt dorado. It shot ok but I lacked confidence with it and ended up hunting the 2012 season with my compound.
Fast forward to this January I on e again found myself at the bowhunters rendezvous in search of a good takedown recurve. I shot and loved the widows but they were out of my price range. I then ended up at the tall timbers booth and fell in love with a beautiful 53@28in bow.
I was very pleased with how well and HARD it shot. Then came the many many hours of practice. I was able to take a wild hog with it in mid feb and couldn't wait for archery season to roll around here in missouri.
Sept 16 the second day of season i Decided to pack the tall timbers recurve tonight an hunt a small secluded food plot with an apple tree right in the middle.this is one of the plots I've been irrigating so there was some tender wheat and oats poppin thru. The night was uneventful till around 6:30 when a 110ish 8 with a sticker entered the plot from the south. He fed for about 10 minutes then stared into the woods behind me. I caught a glimpse of a deer about 20ydd to my left in the brush. He stepped out into the plot. It was freakshow a funky racked 3-4 yr old that I had several pics of. He the 8 a doe and spike all fed and sparred out in the plot about 60yds out. After about 10minutes the other 3 deer walked into the woods to the east. Freakshow turned and started to walk the plot edge right to me. Seems like it took hours but he closed the gap to 11yds before he finally turned to head into the woods. I already had the string in my fingertips..... Time to pinch!!! I remember drawing getting my anchor and sight picture and letting the 525gr cx heritage 150 an Magnus stinger fly!!!!! I hit him high on the shoulder and dropped him. He struggles coughing blood so I knew I got a lung but I put 2 insurance arrows in him anyways. Upon cleaning the first shot would have done the job in short order but no need to let him suffer any.
My first trad deer was definitely a humbling experience...... An experience I hope to repeat for many years to come!!!
