Early PA success!
«

October 14, 2013, 12:53:00 PM »
Friday morning turned out to be a great day in the woods. I had set up near a big Red Oak that the deer were hitting about 1/2 mile behind my house. A couple of years ago my son and I had begun setting what we call, "One stick ground blinds". We use only one 4' tree stick to hang our stands, just high enough to see a ways yet low enough to step off of if we lost our balance. I was up about 7' to the bottom of my platform and just before shooting light I hear a deer coming through the crunchy leaves. I was just able to make out it's shape as it began eating about 10yds. out. After 15 mins. the shooting light finally arrived and I saw it was a good little "legal" buck. (Our area has an antler restriction that requires one antler to have a minimum of 3 point off the main beam. I confirmed this and as he lowered his head at 9 yds. I leaned out and put a Bear Razorhead cedar arrow through his chest. He jumped twice and slowly walked away for about 125 yds. The hole you see in the picture was the exit hole.
I was shooting a Bear T.D. 72# @ 27"

Congrats on a fine deer! Congrats on having acorns, too!
NOne where we hunt, but spotty thereabouts!
Good for you!

Excellent! This year I have set my ladder stands using only the one top section. It puts me about 7-8' up. It has worked beautifully. No kills yet, but many close encounters.

Congratulations! Very nice picture and a good buck! Your tree stand height is very interesting. It would sure make things easier for changing tree stand areas.

Very nice job!
Fine buck!
I use you guys technique myself allot past couple years and feel better hunting lower like that and have yet to have it prove itself not effective. Never picked off yet either. It works real well when hunting mountain laurel.
Never hunt over 12 or 13ft. And a good bit around 7 or 8 givin the situation. I have even hunted about 5ft. Just enought to see over and down into the thick stuff. I try n get in a group of 3-5 trees when doing this

Fantastic stuff Brother. Low is the way to go. Much better shooting angles.

Awesome!
Dave - you've gotta come over my way, I have more acorns than I know what to do with on State Gamelands! (It's the deer that are proving scarce)

Great hunting..
I like the low stand idea - the older I get the better it sounds !
Congrats on a fine buck.
Oh, and I admire you at your tender young age being able to shoot 72 lbs, excellent !
