Why I don't like Columbus Day
« on: October 14, 2013, 01:16:00 PM »
I only have one major beef with the USPS, they lock there doors on Columbus Day and don't deliver the mail.  I have a new to me bow in the mail and would have got it today.  Now I have to set and bite my nails for another day.  It is raining cats and dogs out and I  can't hunt or shoot my bow.

I bought a like new 60 inch John McCullough 59'er off our classifieds. Been wanting one for a long time.  I have 2 of Johns Griffens that are my go to bows. At 70 plus I had not planed to buy another bow but I must tell you youngsters that you never get this new bow thing out of your system

The 59'er is 51 lbs at 28 inches.  Should give about 45 at my 26 inch draw. What do you think I should try for  arrows? This is my first recurve in 20 years. YEHAA!

I had a 59'er, traded it and wish I didn't.  Nice bows, for sure.

Haha, I'm in the exact same situation today. I was hunting this weekend and when I got home there was a notice on the door. I went down to the post office this morning only to find they were closed. It's raining here, too!

Just our way of messing with you.

Besides all this his name was not Columbus, the name of a ancient Samarian godess which means dove. His name was Colon. He captured and sold native girls. I do not know why we have to wait an extra day for our archery stuff in honor of someone that history has proven did not discover anything.

Huh? Colombus discovered the New world. His journeys are detailed in only about 1000 historical documents.Ironically, we know more about him than some of our current political leaders, but I digress.
I'm waiting on a bow,too:(
We teachers don't have a day off anymore for Columbus day(in southern Florida).

Well Gene, Old Chris Columbus didn't "discover" anything!!!!! He was just another "dummy" that got lost.....

Us Indians, knew it was here all along!!!

(my oldest son Kevin told that to his 3rd Grade teacher many years ago)  :biglaugh:

Woodchucker, that's pretty funny!
Of course, many tribes were horrible to each other and often made what Columbus did look pale in comparison(no pun intended). It's currently in fashion to have a romanticized view of First Nation peoples, but under closer scrutiny many tribes of that era don't come off looking to good.(just as many explorers don't)
Every nation, without exception, was taken over by someone more powerful and/or more technlogically advanced. We Greeks used to enslave those we defeated in battle(which was basically everyone:)
We are judging actions from hundreds of years ago through a modern, often distorted prism.

We should never question our text books, because those that release the news and information to the people always have the peoples best interest at heart.  But seriously, on his return voyage they took hundreds of people captive to be sold in Europe. Further research, shows that many of them died in hold of the ships.  Unforgivable acts, no matter how long ago they were comitted, remain unforgivable.
