Yesterday was my son's first "hunt". He's not actually hunting yet...just along to see what it's all about.
Sat for about 4 hours in the morning. Had a red fox come by at a trot. Other than that, it was quiet. I was sure he was miserable.
Went to another blind in the afternoon. About 7:00 I stood up to stretch my legs. When I did I realized that if something came by, I wouldn't be able to easily get a shot. There was a big limb right in my way. So, sure enough, here come 3 nice does. I didn't even see them until the first one was right in position for a shot. Just shy of 7 yards from me. I was waiting for her to turn her head so I could crouch for a shot. After about a minute she spooked and took off. I had no idea why, because the wind was in our favor, and I was sure she hadn't seen me.
The other 2 wandered back the way they came. I took advantage of the chance to get back into position. After about 5 minutes, here they come again, but not all the way to the clearing. After about 15 minutes of trying to bust us, they wandered off away from us.
I turned to look at my son. He had a huge grin on his face, and gave me a big thumbs-up. He said "that was awesome, Dad!"
When we got back out of the woods, we were talking about why they spooked. He said he was looking in a different direction when they came in...he didn't know they were there. When he turned back, the lead doe saw him turn his head a little too fast.
Even though I didn't make meat, I'd have to say it was definitely a successful hunt.
