anyone offer a low wrist recurve
«
on:
October 16, 2013, 07:27:00 AM »
My wife and I have a lot of free time on our hands right now thanks to the fiasco in DC. So I pulled out my old 68 Kodiak Hunter I started off with years ago.
After a few arrows I remembered why I hung it up. I never cared for the high wrist grip on the Kodiak. I then moved on to longbows. I have been very happy with my longbows.
Now having all this time for my mind to wander I have found my self with an itch for a new recurve I can shoot. So once we get back to work I may be looking to buy a recurve to add to the collection.
Is the grip on the 68 Kodiak Hunter considered a high wrist?
Does anyone offer a recurve with a low wrist option?
Thanks
Ray

All of Dan Toelke's recurves have a low/medium grip. He builds the bow grip to a tracing of your hand, contact him and talk to him about how low of a grip he can provide you.

Thanks Jim, Dan just sent me a PM. The three piece Lynx looks pretty good.

Bear Grizzly is advertised to have a medium grip but mine feels on the low side compared to others.

Check out Chad Holm's bows too. He offers his river runner in a low wrist.

Find an older, inexpensive recurve and carve it down yourself ! Best of both worlds. Maybe take a chunk of 2x4 and whittle out a template or mock up first so you know about the size and shape you are liking.

I have been sitting here thinking and kinda had that gut feeling, but I had not seen them offered on their wedsites or for sale used. Is there an advantage to a high wrist when shooting a recurve or is it just personal preference?
I will check out Chad Holm's bows.
Chuck, I have thought about taking the rasp to the old kodiak a few times.

It is not as difficult as many think. Hardest part is knowing what you want, which is why I suggested the mock up first.
Of course, the "value" (monetary) of that bow, if an antique or collector value is made, is gone, if that meant anything to you.

I have a couple PLVs (one standard, one Toby) and a LAG. I might have to call widow and see how their low wrist compares to their Standard and Toby longbow grips.
Widow lists low wrist right there on the site, just saw it. I dont know how I missed it. I must be seeing things.

Chad Hold River Runner, excellent. I just sent my Black Widow PSA back to have the medium grip made into a low so I know they offer it.

Find yourself a 1962 Kodiak Magnum. Those grips just fall away below the arrow shelf. It's one of my quietest bows and a dandy shooter. I see about one a month on Fleabay.

Don't know what part of WV you're in, but there is a bowyer just outside of Greensburg PA that makes a recurve with a grip that seems lower than most. If you're in the Morgantown area, it's an easy drive to visit. Search for Dry Ridge Archery.

You might check out the Texas Long Curve by Great Plains. I bet you'd like it. It like a longbow riser and recurve limbs.
