So the wind was right to sit in the beech flat tonight and I had a chance to be there for sundown which is unusual(usually only get to hunt there during the late morning early afternoon. Last Wednesday I took 150#s of doe from the ground with my recurve at 12 yards here and was hoping to fill tag two tonight. I got on my sitting stone about 4PM and proceeded to watch the squirrel circus. About 4:30 I saw some movement down the trail to the east of me(usually the deer come out of the thicket to the west of me).

Approaching down the trail was what looked to be a nice doe. As"she" got closer I noticed she had a slight limp and spikes! Spikehorns aren't legal here so I figured I was just a spectator. As he got closer I I heard him breathing a might heavy. At about 15 yards he turned his head a bit and saw he was actually a forkhorn which is legal. I would have to wait for him to go past the tree in front of me to get a draw on him, but with 11 days of season left I was figuring I'd pass on him and just use him as practice on drawing down.

When he came around the tree at about 4 yards from me I see he has already been shot! He had an entry wound above his left shoulder. I was so surprised I never finished the draw. He saw me move and threw up his flag and bolted. I waited for about a 1/2 hour to see if anyone would come looking for him and checked the trail for blood sign. I couldn't find any and no one ever came looking for him. I hope he survives the night and the coyotes. Think maybe I should have shot him now. He looks like he was hurting but will  survive if the yotes don't get him.

If he has the stamina to make it he will have learned quite a bit this evening.  He will not make for an easy target again

Seeing one that was already shot would be interesting for sure! I've heard a couple different stories from guys who have had this happen.

Good luck on the rest of your season.

Dave, hope another opportunity comes your way. Good luck and I would probably have made the same choice. Not knowing if someone was going to come along and claim there kill or not that is.

I shot a small buck like that many years ago. Funny thing was that morning I had several monsters around me but saw that small buck coming and he was really hurting(looked to be hit by a car) I had to finsih him off and feel I did the right thing.  BILL
