Hunt With Strobber & A Question

Well I went out and met Strobber (Tim) Saturday and had a nice hunt, didn't get to hunt till dark due to my schedule today, but had a good time and made some new friends.

For the question, 3.5 hours is way to far for me to hunt for just one day, so I went to some game lands 40 minute drive from my house here in Clayton. There is water in the area and it is mostly pines and logged out area. looks like tree stand time, I have hunted tripod stands in Texas before. and I due have a hanging stand now.

In this type area what is the best approach?
and I haven't read, but can I put my stand up on say Friday night and then hunt Saturday and pull it Saturday night?

It depends on public laws in your state. Find a trails leading to and around the water source and hang a stand in one of the Pines roughly halfway between the nastiest stiff ya can find(bedding) and the food and water source in the area. Set the stand so ya can have a favorable wind for morning hunts and evening hunts. This allows you to pick the best time to hunt. The deer will be going from the bedding to the feeding area in the evening and returning in the morning. It is much more complicated than that, but with one stand this will be your best approach to start. after ya have sat the stand a few times with the right wind each time, ya can refine your stand location and even buiold a ground blind to take advantage of your best winds to hunt eash spot in. There will be a lot of opinions but most will agree onthis one, with your limited stands and time as season is upon ya. Best of Luck!! Shawn

In NC stay as tight to thick stuff as you can as they love it and dont stray for from it on NC game lands (pressure), if it is super hot like it has been and that water source is in the thick then they will visit it during hunting hours, if it is in open woods forget it, night time hit only for the most part. Best bet is to stay thick, even in the bow season but especially come rifle/dog time.

Any mast in the area? acorns dropping later towards Oct.?

I would never leave a stand on public land in NC even overnight. I've heard to many stolen stand stories.

Hello Dave, Great meeting you also. I ended up buying a light weight stand. I understand what you are saying about stolen stands, but i am concerned about setting one up like Friday night hunt Saturday morning, and maybe a relocation and then eve hunt and bring home that night. My stick ladder I can haul back and forth easy.

Dave, if you want to hunt one Saturday up were I am at, let me know and we can go.

J. The area I looked at is pretty thick pines and maybe oaks, I didn't pay that close attention. but the water is in a nice tree line so they have cover. This is also an archery only gameland area.

IS that area called flass of the neuse or butners?? I can't remember but I believe I know where you speak of. Stayed up in Roxboro for awhile and went around that area a bit.

If it is archery only then deer movements will remain natural (lucky dog.) Huntin pine woods is tough, no doubt about it. I look for areas away from the road that contain either some sort of edge say pine thicket next to a bottom or a cutover next to a stand of woods. If you can find droppings then you found where they hang out at.
