Spine question for JD jones phenom.
« on: October 20, 2013, 12:09:00 PM »
I have been shooting bows that my uncle has made for me my whole life and have never really had trouble finding the right spine arrow for the bows. I've taken deer with every bow, including two with this one this year. "Close shots, 3-5 yards".

For the last few years I've been shooting one of his phenom's and have been having a hard time getting good arrow flight unless I use 4x5" high shield cut or 3x5.5" banana fletchings, fletched with a bitz fletcher with lots of helical. While this works the arrow is very noisy and doesn't allow any mistakes in a release. It also take the arrow about 5-8 yards to go to sleep.

The bow is also one of the lightest bows I have. so I'm not used to the lower poundage. It's 57@28. I draw to 26" and use 1.75-2" aluminum footing on a 27.5" arrow with standard inserts and 175 vpa heads. It has a b-50 dacron Flemish string. Idk how far from center the shelf is, but it's pretty far from center.

I have been shooting 3555 gt's and just haven't been getting the results I would prefer.

With my short draw and 2" footing would anybody suggest a 1535 gt trad? Idk how much the footing affects spine. I just know when bare shafting, my 3555 show to much spine.

I have tuned arrows to longbows and recurves since I was about 13-14 and this one just has me a little confused.

Btw, while shooting the bigger fletchings, this bow is probably the best bow I've ever shot, it's fast fast fast, whisper quite and has zero hand shock. I love it. I just want to be able to keep the same arrow length, footing and point weight but get good arrow flight without so much fletching.

Thanks to all for the question you've all answered 1000 times. lol

I have a number of JD's bows that I draw around 50#.  I get great arrow flight with Beman ICS Hunters or Axis cut 28 1/2 with 225-250 grains up front.  I know they are carbon out of a self bow but they sure fly nice.  I like to think of them as Burnt Cedar arrows  :)   tippit

I would shoot wood arrows out of that longbow and follow the recommendations here.  Carbons are so stiff.  Also try 3 5 1/2" feathers, high back.
