Check your nocks!!!
« on: October 20, 2013, 03:42:00 PM »
What a morning ... I am lucky to still have my right eye!  I was sitting is a great spot, under a tree in a brush pile near a heavily used trail ... acorns all over.  I was using my pack seat and after about a 3 hour sit and letting a small spike pass a nice 6 point walked form the deeper timber to the trail I was watching.  I watched him for about 10 minuets ... at 12 yards eye to eye. He was pawing for acorns and devouring them, both red and white.  He took one more step, 12 yards broad side with no idea I was there.  Originally I was going to let him walk, but he talked me into it.  I raised my bow (sunset hill) drew and released.  The bow exploded with noise and the arrow flew sideways off the string just missing my right eye and deflecting off the bridge of my nose ... falling 5 yards to my left side.  The buck looked at me and walked away.  My nock broke as I released.  As frustrated as I am, I am very glad I have both eyes and my bow did not break.

Check your nocks guys!

Wow Bob, glad you're OK.  I have had that happen myself - fortunately not recently.  Time to check my own nocks.

What type and color nock was it? I have had three white Nirks break within the last 2-3 months and no longer use them. Fortunately my bow and I survived.

Northwoods ... You gussed it, a 5/16ths White Nirk.

At least I only lost a deer.

Had that happen on a buck once as well. Mine came unglued.  That buck was shot a week later over the fence:( No fun!

Thats one reason I dont care for Nirk Nocks, they seem to be mighty thin on the sides. Maybe just Me, but I have had many go the road Because I checked them regularly. Glad YOU didnt get hurt!! God was watching out for you Friend!

I have had the same experience with white Nirk nocks. There was a thread awhile back about this very thing happening. I found out I was not the only one having the breakage problem. Went to the work bench and threw about 50 in the recycle bin.
Glad to hear you are ok and only lost a shot at a deer and not an eye.
