looking for a custom bowyer
« on: October 22, 2013, 03:11:00 PM »
This has been my first season using trad gear after selling my wheelie bow after last season. I was committed already to using traditional bows for this year and more to come... But want to make it "official" in a sense.

I currently shoot a Kanati, which I absolutely adore! I love everything about the bow.

I'd like to get a recurve now, I would prefer a shorter bow, possibly 52" if feasible. A three piece with Antler limb bolts and some type of dark wood.

I don't have a lot of money to dish out, so I may be better off looking used.

Can someone recommend someone, or possibly a used bow that fits the description. Looking to spend $400.

Thanks
Jake Edge

I don't know of any 52" three piece recurves. I saw Hoot's offered a two piece take down in those specs.

The only 52" 3pc recurve I'm aware of currently would be from Kirk at Bigfoot Bows --edit forgot about Timberghost--  Highly respected maker.  Call or email him.  Toelke makes a super 52" 1pc called the Kestrel if you draw under 29".  If you like a suuuhhweet smooth 52-54-56" 1pc or 2pc Hoots are awesome.  Great for long draws.  My favorite 'short bow' so far.  I just traded mine for a Thunderchild cause I'm a longbow guy at heart.  Good luck!

Forgive my ignorance, I'm still learning all the types of bows and what goes with what.

2 or 3 piece would be fine. Also it can be a 56" as well...

I will look into Hoot's, thank you.

Check out TimberGhost bows (Tradgang Sponsor) Higher than your price range,  but he has some really nice short static recurves.

Legend's Bows, a sponsor on the board here has a 3 piece recurve that might fit the bill. I dont know about 52", but his smaller recurve is a great deal for the money. check out his website.

Thanks rxhntr,

I just looked at most the bows you guys listed, very awesome bows. I hope I didn't offend anyone with the amount I have to spend. I see its way underpriced for the work thats out there and I respect that! I suppose I'm looking for something in the used range!

Nineworlds, I work for that state forest service, just got back on a deployment from Idaho fighting fire, so I suppose you can say "whereever theres fire!"

lol, just moved from south florida, now in north central.

In that price range you will be limited to purchasing used customs I believe. Wait a bit and save a little extra and get a Stalker Stickbow, South makes a killer static tip.

Cool deal edge.  I'm structural (fire in a box as you guys say haha!).

Yeah I meant to keep your budget in mind, you could watch for a used custom for sure and keep saving, or use your 400 as a down payment for a higher priced bow built exactly how you like it.  If the wait time is long enough most bowyers accept payments on the balance.

I think that may be the route I go nineworlds, use what I have to make a down payment then just pay off as its built. I really want something built to and for me.

Na nothing to take away from structure, I went through fire college at Florida state fire college in Ocala under some very prestigious captains and LTs. I also volunteered for a couple houses before I went wildland. I just prefer to be in the woods. With this route I get to do a lot of wildlife and forest management along with fire control. I love it.

You have quite a few options. Another to consider is
Journeyman archery.  Jared is a sponsor and makes a sweet bow.
I think your budget might limit you however going direct to a bowyer.. So keep a look out in the classifieds

I think the Gorr Cascades are terrific short TD recurves!  I love the way the limb/riser come together on these bows.

Bob Morrison makes some terrific short recurves as well. His ILF short risers and short limbs are high performance and good looking to boot.

Cascade Archery by Steve Gorr who is a Sponsor here.  Also, Jess Stuart.  Just plug in his name on directory and email him.  He has a great 52" on the old Rocky Mountain Recurve style.  Actually, he makes them from 52" to 60" or so, I believe.

While you're looking around, check out Two Tracks Ambush recurve. I owned a REALLY pretty one, but it was just a bit too heavy at my draw and I had to trade it. Sure hated parting with it, though.

It's a tiny little 50" thing and up to 29" or so, it's smooth and fast. The price, even new, isn't bad either. I think they can be had for around $500 and up depending on options.
