I screen wood ashes through a fine mesh for a wind puff replacement for talcum powder. An old sock with ash in it makes a good wind puff. Just shake it. Real wine bottle cork screws works better for face camo.(burnt cork) Mike

Sure, Works pretty good. I usually use face paint or burnt cork. Sometimes a face mask.

The last couple of years I've rubbed an unscented face lotion on in the winter to keep from drying out so much. Last year I got the bright idea to mix ashes out of the pellet stove in the lotion for a quick, cheap face paint. Man, that concoction burnt my face up! Couldn't wash it off fast enough. Left my cheeks red and raw for quite some time.
My thoughts on ashes is that they can be rough on the face, at least in that capacity.

Old timers used to burn the end of a cork and rub it on for camo.

Wood ashes are a great way to remove the hair from hides when tanning, I wouldn't be putting them on my face.

Wood ash is very caustic and can burn your skin. Charcoal, on the other hand makes good face camo.
