I was thinking of MR, Kifaru, Tenzing or Badlands....
But wanted one that could be daypack locally but also easily go 3-4 days or haul a hog or deer from way back out in swamp instead of dragging whole all the way to truck.
Ended up deciding on a two pack vs three pack approach.
Instead of daypack, 3-4 day pack, and then a week pack or backcountry setup....decided with a more versatile pack for day and local.....and a much larger for any extended backcountry stuff.
For my convertible for lack of better term I decided on a Badlands Sacrifice...for price, warranty, reviews by a guy that abuses his equipment on Bowsite (ElkReaper) and some other posts.
It weighs about 3.5pounds, internal steel frame...very cool on back with great circulation and shop I ordered from gave you two free items...I selected the rain cover and also the hydration bladder.
With straps cinched it is able to go from small day pack to whatever you want just by loosening straps for compression. I am 6'3" and it fits my torso fine with ability to set waist belt where hip bone is centered in belt...then adjust shoulder straps...and then also adjust load bearing straps properly while loosening shoulders afterwards for proper fit with weight on hips rather than pulling on shoulders. They do not sit up high like some mountaineering packs but work nonetheless.
It has plenty of pockets....and to me was the perfect ALL AROUND pack....
I bought it from Story Creek...free shipping plus two free add-ons. Material is a little more noisy but that is about the only downside I have. I loaded it with 60lbs of books from my office that I was taking to garbage can....expanded straps...loaded her up...tightened straps...adjusted per recommendations...belt, shoulders, load, shoulders. Walked around block and then back to house to dump them in garbage can for recycling pickup. A corner of a book jabbed me in back and it was definitely heavy but the pack took the weight no problem and with some more familiarity with pack and playing with adjustments I am sure it would be more than sufficient for a couple miles with 65# of meat in back.
http://www.storycreekinc.com/p-439-badlands-sacrifice-pack.aspx Your mileage may vary...but though great I could not see the spending the money on a Kifaru (first choice).....I had it down to Tenzing, Badlands, and Black Creek....Badlands won out looking at warranty, reputation for good for the money, and it was the lightest out of the bunch. May not see like a lot for daypack but being 2-3 pounds lighter than competition in same size pack (3800cc fully expanded) is huge.
