A triple play
« on: November 07, 2013, 11:07:00 AM »
I got to hunt Tuesday morning with a good friend who’s one of the finest stickbow hunters I know. I enjoy hunting with him and we share an equal enthusiasm for getting really close to critters. We had a set up off a thick marshy “muck hole” that has both Sika and Whitetails. When we were headin out Bob mentioned that if a doe gives him a good shot he was going to take it, knowing he had some help to get it out of the marsh.

We got set up with a perfect wind condition and as I climbed in the stand I could already hear deer in the marsh. As the sun was rising critters where getting close. We were hunting within 80 yards of each other covering several trails coming out of the marsh. Two big does step out right in front of Bob,wasn’t very long and ‘thump’ the deer busted back thru the frag and it wasn’t too long and a big ol crash. I could look over towards his stand and could see with bino’s the red arrow stuck in the ground!

A stag bugled close and we both were mewing back and forth to each other trying to get the stag over towards us. Wasn’t long before we could hear deer in the marsh headin our way. Was looking for the stag when 2 more whitetail does step out in front of Bob… he’s warmed up and thump AGAIN!! This time I see the deer heading my way with blood coming down its side in the perfect place. The deer stops 5 yards from me and is having a hard time getting air. I thought it was going to fall right in front of me but does that 20 yard death run and falls over. The other doe that was with it runs back into the frag but knows the other deer went by me so after a few minutes its coming my way. It eventually steps out at 12 yards or so, after looking around it turns just right and I figured if were draggin 2 may as well be 3!! I eased to full draw, pick a spot and watched them yellow feathers disappear right in the spot! I used my Dad’s old Bear razorhead for the second time this season and Im sure he was smiling this morning. The deer went 50-60 yards out in the frag and crashed. The old razorhead done good and still does the job. Here it is buried in the marsh mud

20 minutes or so go buy and we hear deer in the water again…..this is awesome. A buck and doe step out in front of Bob again. He’s pretty strict on his bucks he’ll shoot and let this guy pass. It turns tho and comes right to me, standing like a picture in the bright sunlight. He walks 5 yards away, giving me all kinds of shots…hope he does that 2 or 3 years from now!!!

THUMP

We waited a bit to see if anything else shows up but we had work to do! We trailed Bobs 1st one and while trailing that one found mine laying right next to his blood trail and a bit further found his. Draggin deer thru the marsh is a muddy mess but we were grinning the whole time!

Going to be a day I wont soon forget.

Bob in his stand, I stood at the bottom of the tree and touched the platform base with my 60" recurve, it doesnt have to be high if you have the cover

Bobs two arrows!

This is the stuff they love living in and can be a challenge if the blood trails arent good....it was fun this morning with great blood trails!

#2 so far this season with my Dad's old Bear Razorhead

Here is the triple play after dragging em all thru the marsh up onto high ground

The hero picture before all the work starts! Bob used a handmade longbow and killed one doe with a razorcap and the other with one of the new, heavy wensel woodsmans. I got mine with one of the new W&W carbon risered ILF bow and BF extreme's powering that old razorhead!!

Hey John,

Whoa buddy, congrats to both of you and some real nice shooting! Gotta love tramping through those swamp reeds, been there and done that.   :(

Stay with it, I'm sure a buck of you liking will soon be along!

Great day in the swamp! That frag can be some nasty stuff and if you're not careful, easy to get turned around and lost in.
