JD Berry's bows are too quiet....lol
« on: November 10, 2013, 07:57:00 AM »
The score to date..... deer 2- Mudd 0.

I am having fun with them though and that counts for a lot in my book.

So far this season I have been seeing way more bucks than does.

I'd guess something like a 4:1 ratio, and something I've never witnessed before.

My goal is to take a deer from the ground with nothing between me and my intended target but air.

I've missed twice, once on an 8 pointer and once on a doe.

In both cases only air between us.

My mistakes were evident, on the buck I in my excitement didn't get my normally deep hook on my string thus causing a slight noise on release. The buck did the "ole Texas duckin an roll" and my arrow passed within an in of his left shoulder.

I didn't make that mistake with the doe....lol but when you shoot a JD Berry bow one should and can expect a "dead quiet" bow. I held at the bottom of her body line just behind her left shoulder thinking any sound made would cause her to drop right into my deadly projectile.

WRONG!! "The Amazon Lady"(JD Berry Vixen) didn't make any sound this time and the arrow went exactly where I intended but the doe never reacted... so clean miss under...lol

She left quickly but only after the arrow was already in the ground on the other side of her...lol

"My bow was just too quiet!"... said no one ever...until now!....lol

Too funny Mudd.
Although, it sounds like your ratios are similar to here. I've seen way more bucks this year than in the past. Still out numbered by the does, but the buck ratio is definitely improving. Our extended any sex season seems to be working.

Brian I was shooting the "Amazon Lady".

She's definitely good looking and good shooting but she's a Vixen.

This coming week I fully expect to be able to give a 1st hand account for my new JD Berry Northstar.

Mudd,

I did the same thing last year on a Doe, purposely aimed low at the belly line supposing she would drop at the sound and thus into the arrows path.

Nada, nothing, nope not even an inch, she stood stock still till after the arrow was on her other side.

Then she turned and looked at me and then I think it hit her what had happened and she got out of there!

I have shot a bunch of bows over time but if someone is looking for one of the top American longbows available I would encourage them to check out JD Berry Archery (one of our sponsors).

I've shot all of Mr Berry's straight limbed American longbows and a few of his reflex-deflex style bows.

I've never been disappointed in any of them.

1st, the fit and finish are above reproach, 2ndly each and everyone them that I've shot has had ease of draw and point-ability that makes shooting them "a dream".

They absolutely hit where I'm looking.

They have become my "Go to" bows when the shot counts.

I know that the bows will do their part if I do mine.

I feel like I let my Vixen "The Amazon Lady" down this past week as I can see where the mistakes were made and neither had anything to do with what I was shooting.

It is me and me only that caused the 2 misses.

My Vixen is the quietest laminated bow I own! 66" 53@27 shooting 565gr wilderness surewoods is bad medicine for anything that is known for having excellent hearing.

When you shoot low aim for the heart. If the animal doesn't drop you have a heart shot. If they do most of the time it's in the lungs or a clean miss.

:deadhorse:  NO MUDD THAT'S NOT A DEER THAT'S MY MULE ! Glad to hear that you really enjoy shooting the bows that James puts out and James really enjoys hearing that is customers are happy with the finished product. I also enjoy reading the good comments here on Trad Gang. James is truly a Master Bowyer.

Elk77 quote " James is truly a Master Bowyer."

I could not agree more!

But I believe there's more to it than his just being a Master Bowyer.

I think Mr. Berry puts something special in each of his bows and that "something special" is... a piece of himself.

James knows his wood. He knows the character of each wood type and knows what will work together and what won't. He knows how each piece of wood will compliment the others in the bow in order to bring out the best in each of them. Along with that, he does put "a piece of himself" in each bow that he builds. They are not only works of art, but a functional tool that I believe anyone would be proud to carry into the forest. Just my $0.02, for what is is worth.

I only shot low because that's where I was looking.

I expected the doe to drop some at least but without any sound she never budged.

The bow most definitely isn't the problem, it's the shooter!!!!

Well said Ric. James does put "a piece of himself" in each bow that he builds. I see and hear it every morning at the morning coffee table.
