Well after a slow start to the season, i finally was able to get the job done.
Saturday morning found me sitting on a creek crossing with an old clearcut in front and to my left, a cow pasture to my direct left and a trailer park to to my front right. Its a good pinch point and i figured with the rut really starting to kick in i figured they would be using it.
The wind was perfect until the sun came up, then it did a 180 and started blowing strait into the clearcut. by then it was already light out so i decided to sit it out and see what happened. around 8 i heard something cross the creek, but it wasn't in front of me like i expected. It was behind me going into a small thicket. moments later i heard grunting and running, and for the first time in my life i heard an estrous bleat from the real thing. Well they did there thing for a good 30 minutes back behind me, but never was able to see them. i was going to try and grunt to them but when i blew my call nothing happened. Turns out a 10 month olds slobber can really stop one up, so i did my best deer impression with my mouth. About 850 it appeared to that my impression hadn't done any good and i was thinking about getting down when I caught some movement coming from behind me. It was skirting the edge of the thicket and mking its way towards me, so I got ready for a shot. The path he was walking was going to take him through one small opening at about 15 yards. As he entered the opening i drew my bow, picked a spot and let it fly. The arrow flew true and the buck spun towards me on impact and ran strait towards me for a couple steps and then went back the way he came. He stopped about 20 yards behind me flicked his tail once and fell. I waited 15 minutes just to make sure he wasn't going anywhere. i got down and went to where he was standing and there was blood imediately. A couple yards into ther trail i found this.
surprisingly the blood trail wasn't that great until the last few yards, but then really opened up. At the end of the trail, I found this.
He's not the biggest buck i've killed, but after the season i have had i was very happy
on a side note it was the first deer i've managed to shoot with a treeshark. it didn't dissapoint. the hole was huge!
thanks for looking, Eric
