When I show my retired military ID card at a local Home Improvement store that gives a "military discount", the cashiers almost always say "thank you for your service" and I almost always reply, "it was MY honor" and, if I'm not very careful, I can easily get choked-up, a little, on my way out of the store....
I feel like I am the one who should be thanking the citizens of this country for giving me the rare opportunity and privilege to lead brave young Americans in peace and in war. Without a doubt, I know that being a small unit leader was always my first, best destiny, whether as an NCO, or later, as an officer. I thank God and the American People for giving me the opportunity to be able to do that which is best and most important, in the company of the finest people I have ever known.
Don't be surprised if, the next time you thank a veteran, he or she thanks YOU right back!
