The field and stream rut report struck again. Action has been slow until recently here. I called a nice, wide 4 point in Saturday but had a deflection on a branch. I hunted my honey hole again Monday in a different stand and had an exciting hunt come 9am. I kept hearing a quiet grunt/bleet behind me and just knew something was up. I blew a series of tending grunts and low and behold I had a skipper behind me that I hadnt hear walk in. I continue to hear the grunts and I did 2 more series of tending grunts before I heard branches breaking. I saw the deer moving quick for my shooting lane and went into my focused mode. Before I knew it I was at my anchor point and when his vitals were in my lane the arrow was loose on a 20 yard shot. I knew I double lunged him right off the bat and he tipped over 30 yards from me within seconds.
I'm extremely happy to have killed another deer bowhunting, and it is a welcome turn around to my season after shooting a doe on day 2 and finding she had been gut shot, never to be recovered.
This buck weighed 145 dressed and both antlers had been broken off some time ago from fighting I presume (they did measure the 3" minimum on the dot still)
